Popular Post Bkk Brian
Social stigma a major barrier to controlling COVID-19 in Thailand Harrowing stories of Thai people experiencing great distress and turbulence have been widely reported across the country. A condo manager in Nonthaburi locked a family into their residence with wooden planks after they contracted COVID-19 in July. A husband was fired from his job at a construction site in Pathum Thani because his wife became infected with COVID-19 and were asked to leave, which left them destitute and with just 80 baht to their name. Social stigma associated with COVID-19 is the major culprit in these cases, evidenced further by the husband of a 24-year-old woman who was physically attacked and kicked out of her house after she became infected with the virus. It has become one of the reasons why people are both hesitant to get tested for the virus, and it in many countries is part of the reason why the pandemic is stubbornly persistent. https://theisaanrecord.co/2021/08/20/social-stigma-a-major-barrier-to-controlling-covid-19-in-thailand/ 3 1

Popular Post Bkk Brian
Data from Institute for Health Metrics and Evaluation (IHME) A key limitation in our understanding of the COVID-19 pandemic is that we do not know the true number of infections. Instead, we only know of infections that have been confirmed by a test – the confirmed cases. But because many infected people never get tested,2 we know that confirmed cases are only a fraction of true infections. How small a fraction though? To answer this question, several research groups have developed epidemiological models of COVID-19. These models use the data we have – confirmed cases and deaths, testing rates, and more – plus a range of assumptions and epidemiological knowledge to estimate true infections and other important metrics. Mean estimate showing just under 100,000 a day. 1

If the downward trend is to be believed then why the reduced number in testing. I will be taking a break from posting, as my family in the States has just had a covid death. It was my Brother In-Laws brother, who unfortunately did not believe in being vaccinated just like his wife. He had lung cancer, which was from working as a ceiling installer (Asbestosis), and developed a very serious case of pneumonia on Sunday as well as other complications, unfortunately the Hospital tried everything they could for him. He passed away about 2 hours ago, and I just got off of the phone with my sister and family. Sad day. Please stay safe folks. Sorry to hear that Ryan, many of us have families that we worry about in our home countries and when something tragic happens it is worse because we are so far away. The woman lied about her visiting daughter and son-in-law to avoid the 14-day quarantine set in place to allow enough time to avoid a Covid-19 outbreak.

Take care and stay safe. Thanks Brian, at the end of the day there will be many that will always say they know no one infected or who has passed on because of Covid. Unfortunately since the very beginning of this pandemic I have been pretty vocal with telling folks I have lost family here in Thailand, although at the time not tested because it was just after the Chinese New Years, and then a teacher my children had in Elementary school, as well as a few former co-workers and fellow LE folks. My Mother has been hospitalized for Covid but thankfully she had been vaccinated, my sister and her family are also vaccinated as the children were just vaccinated yesterday. Lets hope that others do not loose family like I have. Taking time away for a much needed mental break. Keeping the doors closed so I do not have to hear the constant blare of the sirens, and wish we could escape to Hua Hin for a month or so. My second AZ vaccination is now in less than 4 weeks, but still fighting with the issue of getting my GF vaccinated. The whole process is really silly actually. As I say, Stay folks, and protect your families.

Juristic staff took it all down as soon as they found out and shipped the boys off to a hospital. Admittedly the dummies tried to keep hide the infected for a week or more, and kept using the gym, pool etc. Servings of stupid all round.

Bkk Brian
The failure of vaccine policy pushed Thailand from the best recovering country to the worst How did Thailand turn from the best country in terms of its response to COVID-19 to the worst one? Here are some lessons to be learnt. First, “the fortunate situation in 2020 has turned into a trap for the Thai government,” is what has been concluded by the Thailand Development Research Institute (TDRI), the most prominent public policy think tank in Thailand. "the Thai vaccine policy reflected mismanagement of risks by relying on an optimistic assumption regarding the number of AstraZeneca vaccines that Thailand could produce domestically after the transfer of the technology. No doubt that ‘betting on a one-horse strategy’ proved to be wrong. In a similar vein, the decision not to participate in the COVAX project was also a terrible move." https://www.orfonline.org/expert-speak/failure-of-vaccine-policy-pushed-thailand/ 1

Bkk Brian
Lesson to learn for those thinking of group celebrations: 19 people get jail sentence for partying in defiance of emergency The Bangkok North Municipal Court on Thursday sentenced 19 adult partygoers to three years imprisonment and THB15,000 fine per person for breaching the emergency-decree ban on gatherings of more than five people. The court reduced the previous sentence of six years imprisonment and THB30,000 fine, as they had pleaded guilty. Popular Post mtraveler
Whether you think the numbers are improving or not, and whether you think that 70% of the population will have received double doses of vaccine by February, the unfortunate truth is it's probably not enough. Israel today is a cautionary tale. I read today (NY Times) that even though 60% of the population is double vaccinated (and they only vaccinate with either Pfizer or Moderna), they are now seeing a 4th wave of Covid. The claim is that it's a combination of the Delta variant, and the fact that the vaccinations people received months ago have lost their effectiveness over time. I think these facts should lead us to expect that even when we reach 70%, there will not be sufficient protection to end the spread of the disease. I've read we need to reach 85% to control Delta, and I would assume that even then, it's going to take a lot longer to get this under control. For those who think I'm just trying to be negative, I'm in the same boat as everyone else. I want the country to reopen so I can get my life back. I want to see the economy get back on track, and those who are suffering with no money or food to get their jobs back too. But the realist in me thinks the road ahead is still long. And I really believe that the numbers showing a "peak" are manipulated, by minimizing testing, and by not including some of the testing in the total. Adjust for those two factors, and I believe you would see that no peak has been reached.
