BANGKOK (NNT) - Concerning the progress of the draft Prevention and Suppression of Torture and Enforced Disappearances Act, the opposition has urged officials to speed up their deliberations, so that it can be included on the agenda of the parliamentary session.

Opposition chief whip, Suthin Klangsaeng, said after the opposition whip meeting today (Sept 7) that the meeting agreed to defer consideration of the draft Prevention and Suppression of Torture and Enforced Disappearances Act, because society is facing more immediate problems. If members cooperate to allow enough time, legislators should be able to consider the draft act in parliament on September 18th. The issue will be discussed with the government whip.

Currently, Thailand has no laws to protect victims and penalize state officials who torture and enforce the disappearance of persons, especially suspects. Therefore, the essence of the law must clearly define the penalties, as torture and enforced disappearances carried out by state officials are serious human rights violations.

So Immigration will be up for prosecution next when your annual extension is due and they torture you with more forms, taking the prison style photo holding the deportation form and then when they send you to IDC making you dissapear from their sight.  Good to know....

Yet, aren't these activities historically clandestine by their very nature?

How might they legislate towards things that they have little knowledge of?

This is about some very brave MPs combating political state terror, suppression and murder of non- violent dissident anti- govt. freedom protesters.Brave Outspoken Students & Journalists typically, exiled or seized / killed/ disappeared, in & out of the country, for freely expressing their perfectly factual & justified anti- authoritarian opinions. Sanctioned from the very top. Doesn’t directly affect Foreigners here…….Very far indeed from a joking matter….literally deadly serious…..

It  will be as  effective as  all the other ignored  laws, waste of time...as  usual.

i thought this would be protected in the Thai constitution like in America.  this is the 21st. century, <deleted> human rights?

Thailand has no laws to protect victims of the above crimes.. really ?

Or just not the backbone to enforce them against influential persons.

That's all very nice, but amounts to nothing when torture and disappearances can be discreetly suggested by high-ranking government officials, who have the ability to give themselves an amnesty by controlling the relevant law making bodies. In essence, the mindless thugs who carry out these request may get punished if caught, but the ones behind them have immunity through the system they themselves set up.

You would hope not, but it does happen. Foreigners are tortured. Beaten and made to confess. Thonglor police planting drugs on tourists and even expats. Burmese being framed for murder after being tortured.  Expats caught selling drugs also tortured. So believe what you want it is about all, but should already be a protected right.  Foreigners dissappear all the time as well......not just about Thais, and no its not a joking matter. My original post was not a joke.

Expat Reminder: stay well clear here of all politics, drugs, violence, dodgy dealing, police, alcohol, gambling, crazy women, toxic people, anti- monarchy, defamation, etc. stay safe & well……please.

Prompted by the recent British Consulate OP, including Prisoner relief work, I researched online about British Prisoners here….. maybe 80 or so currently detained……absolute horror show of really stupid ( non- violent, victimless) criminality, atrocious prison conditions, long years for UK transfer & useless consulate work. Long Visa Overstays, Working without WP, Retaining Lost Property, Selling Non- Hard Drugs (Very Small Qtys for Personal Use). Did see several Heroin Smugglers……

Mostly fairly petty & plain daft / ignorant offenses to common sense really…….misdemeanours in US, not even real Crime……Described Bangkok prison conditions of over crowding, rampant filth & disease, very poor food and utter misery, were hideous & sockening to read. STAY SAFE . Be Uninvolved !
