Strange bird in the garden

Featured Replies

Today I heard this noise going on in the garden , bird making strange noises,

and very good rendering of a cat meowing , the bird was about size of a

common myna , was shiny black in colour, had a long tail compared to

body length, but out of the end of it long tail , was an even longer wire

like extension with small feather at the end, something like some Birds

of paradise have,

I dont have smart phone or camera so have tried to describe it the best I can,

I have seen a similar black shiny bird , bit bigger also long tail, but without

the extension. anybody know what it could be...?

regards worgeordie

You have seen a longtailed Drongo, very common in Southern Thailand. In the north they are not common ,but have a cousin without the long twin tail. I have seen them hunting butterflies.

Yes Crossy, that is what I think it is.

But it was Worgeordie that saw a bird of that description. So maybe he will recognize the bird, now he can see it in a beautiful picture.

Thanks for finding the right picture.

Here in Rayong we have these too and they are cool with the different vocalizations. I think there are several different types with or without the long tails.

Lets face it.

Its not the first time you have woke up with some strange bird in the garden making weird noises now is it?

Spot on Crossy I reckon. Racket Tailed Drongo. Seen a fair few in CM.

If it's how you describe....like a cat meowing (loudly or even in a fight), it's a drongo, I'd suspect fancying a partner or fighting off a predator in a nest.  We had a pair of drongos high up in the thick of palm trees.  The first time we heard them, from 200feet away or so, we were sure some animal was having a fight.  I ventured down toward the palms and saw one of the drongos fly off.  I subsequently saw the drongos in the same area many time, but heard the commotion only a few times.
