But for a driver called Somchai his and his girlfriend's escape from what should have been certain death could only be because of revered monk Luang Pu Thuat. Somchai Traiphrom, 32 and his better half were going along the expressway when he realised they were entering a traffic hotspot. So he asked his GPS and app for a preferred route that took him to a raised section on the Bang Phli - Suksawat part of the Bangkok Expressway. Thereafter he hit the edge of a wall and toppled over ten meters to the ground below. His consignment of lamyai (longan) spread all over the place made for an interesting Daily News photo mock-up. Thai caption: Buddha to the Rescue! Picture: Daily News Samut Prakan police could barely believe it as Somchai said matter-of-factly that he was doing the lamyai run from Chanthaburi to Korat. He and his girlfriend were completely uninjured. He was convinced that his Luang Pu Thuat image on the dashboard, given to him by his brother, had saved them, reported Daily News. That and the backup Luang Pu amulet round his girlfriend's neck. The monk was born in Siam in 1582, according to Wikipedia, and lived to the ripe old age of 100 before dying in what would later be Malaysia. My Thai BIL borrowed our new truck one time and fell asleep at the wheel driving from Pattaya to Sakon Nakhon, crashing it into a power pole. Luckily no one was injured, when our truck was taken to a nearby Mitsubishi garage then towed back to Pattaya and I noticed the wife's amulets were missing. She said they were probably stolen by the garage or tow company as those amulets must of had strong powers to make sure no one was injured.
