BANGKOK (NNT) - Deputy Prime Minister Gen Prawit Wongsuwan has directed the Department of Fisheries to step up the suppression of illegal fishing while providing compensation for unregistered fishing vessels that have not violated the law.

Deputy Prime Minister Gen Prawit Wongsuwan today presided over a meeting of the National Fisheries Committee held via video conference, where the issues of illegal, unreported, and unregulated (IUU) fishing and environmental impacts from fisheries were on the agenda.

The DPM urged all subcommittees to expedite and follow up on the operations, and to collaborate their efforts in solving IUU fishing, as well as providing aid to affected stakeholders.

The DPM ordered the Department of Fisheries to gather information on issues faced by fishermen at each location and to regularly report their findings to the national committee.

He also urged the department to provide compensation to operators of the 75 unregistered fishing vessels that have never violated the law. A total budget of 490 million baht has been set aside for this purpose.

Gen Prawit then asked the department to streamline the processes of prosecution overseen by the Fisheries Monitoring Center and to work more closely with the Royal Thai Police.

The committee in this meeting acknowledged the progress made on the mitigation of impacts from fisheries against marine animals, as well as the efforts made to address the withdrawal of vessels from the monitoring system.

Provide compensation to un-registered fishing vessels that have not violated the law?

Hmmmm.

Well spotted, you may be correct.  I doubt it's a SKX007.

I've heard of watch fanatics wearing a watch on each wrist, but the only time I heard of multiple watches on the same wrist is when combatants pilfer them from the deceased bodies of their enemies.

Are there any cabinet ministers unaccounted for today?

Time to go and buy an unregistered fishing vessel that hasn’t violated the law PDQ

IUU fishing from the Thais is rampant and always has been. There are just too many highly influential people in this game.

There are now Thai fleets almost everywhere, feeding mother ships and staying at sea for months on end.

Thailand does not want to stop this business....but does want to be noticed and seen to be doing something. Nowadays the world is wising up and know how Thais think.

It’s like having Dracula telling you not to suck blood.

Oh dear, not another crackdown? The previous crackdowns (there have been so many, many, many) have all been an utter failure. They keep doing the same old thing over and over again and keep expecting a different result. I think that was Einstein’s definition of insanity.

We all know where this is going.

...and these aspects appear to missed so consistently [as do challenging/questioning] throughout contemporary journalistic endeavors. Real journalism has been dying for some time now.

Don't know which is worse - the original pieces or those syndicates that wish to republish the stories.

Promises until the next watch comes around
