Many food vendors in Thailand are complaining over skyrocketing pork prices, forcing them to increase the prices of their dishes by 5 baht a plate.

 

Pork prices are currently 210-230 baht/kg, which is much higher than in mid-2021, when the highest price was 140 baht/kg.

 

Food vendors, especially those who sell dishes like pork fried rice, stir-fried pork with garlic, pork rice porridge and red pork on rice, have posted signs explaining that they have had to increase their prices by 5 baht.

5 Baht rise in the price of your food order per dish.

All the food vendors in my area have put their prices up 10 Baht per portion.

Those that are still selling food at the new inflated prices, are also reducing the size of the portions they are selling, therefore in effect putting up their prices to 15 Baht a portion or possibly more.

There is absolutely no justification for this kind of price gouging ( because that is what it is )

If a Kg of Pork rises by as much as 100 Baht per Kg, and the vendors makes 25 portions from that Kg then the price should only rise by 4 Baht due to the increase of the Pork.

With Eggs rising in price this week, and also cooking Gas, expect the price for your food to rise by another 10 baht at least over the next couple of weeks or so.

Some vendors have closed their stalls due to the high price of Pork, saying they will not sell anything, so why open.

Why would you expect them to sell at cost price? Profit margins are not fixed, they scale up. If most vendors raises prices, there's a good reason for it.. or there's a pork mafia operating in your area.

That depends on where you are .in our rural area were we are it would be 45 baht a plate ,in a city probably more .for a Kie-Dow,fried egg you can now add on 10 baht. 

Rich foreigners (which most of us are in comparison with vast swathes of the Thai population) should be ashamed of themselves for whining about minuscule increases in prices for items that they can well afford (unlike Thais "living" on wages of 9,000bt per month).

Probably used it as an excuse to put non pork dishes up too

Stop selling pork... the farmers and middle=men traders will soon drop their prices.

30 baht in my area

In my area so far they have not increased prices yet.  One of our best friends runs a stall next to the local market.  She is afraid of losing customers if she raises the price for meals.  Currently in the 20 to 35 baht range.

Do you not understand that many of us are unhappy with the price increases because we know this is causing further hardship for others? 

1. You've got to feel for the locals (well, those lucky to be employed) on fixed incomes, who already live on the knife's edge as per their costs for rent, food, etc. Another say 20 baht per day in costs is 600 baht a month.

 

2. A result perhaps of the government apparently ignoring the swine flu problem ... until it was too late.

Could be some Gofundme  campaigns coming up to support 

Some expat retirees if the prices continue to rise ????

But they are not selling it at a cost price.

It is a slight rise in production costs that will only eat a small amount into their Profit margins that are already built in ( or should be )

If they wish to maintain their existing profit margins, they should become more productive, and efficient

To continually put up prices, and expect as much profit, is a lazy business persons attitude.

 

There is a shortage of pork due to hospitals buying up pigs for transplants.

Wonder if they will do penis transplants, if so I want a decent sized sausage sewn on.

Once it goes up, it will stay there. Eat chicken.

They shouldn't be expected to sell it at cost price. The margin is built into the price, usually as a percentage, not a fixed amount. If you order a side of potatoes with your meal, do you expect them to add the cost of raw potato to your bill? Profits are based on gross margins, all businesses expect an increase in profit as revenue goes up. They might make 5bt profit selling a bottle of water, they don't expect a 5bt profit on all more expensive beverages.
