Marriage infidelity: Thai man pretends he's attending family wedding but ties knot with "mia noi"

A Thai woman called Parichart, 42, - who is also a Phoo yai Ban (local official) in Tha Luang district of Lopburi, central Thailand, contacted Thai Rath with an extraordinary tale of marriage infidelity.

 

Her rat of a husband, Sanya, also 42, had pretended he was going to a relative's wedding. Instead he married his mistress.

 

To add insult to injury the "mia luang" (main wife) sent the happy couple 1,000 baht because she didn't attend the wedding in person.

 

Parichart, or Aen Duangmoon, was in tears as she showed reporters her marriage certificate and pictures. 

 

She said she met Sanya in 2017, he was a widower and she was widowed. 

 

Love blossomed and the next year they married. He had a 15 year old daughter who took up quite a lot of his time and he also worked in agriculture, or so he said, and needed to travel a lot.

 

They just met at weekends and holidays. He had his own house as she did.

 

But in 2021 he started to see her less frequently saying he was very busy with work.

 

She always used to get his bonus in full but last year he came up with the excuse that he didn't get one.

 

Then on 8th January, a Saturday, he said that he had to pick up his mum and elder brother and his brother's partner, because they were finally going to get married in Phayao according to nothern traditions. 

 

"Oh goody, can I come too" said Parichart.

 

"Sorry", said Sanya, "You won't be able to go because of Covid restrictions".

 

Parichart accepted this disappointment and was convinced when Sanya's location was shown to be Phayao. She asked for the bride's bank account number so she could send her 1,000 baht as a wedding gift in absentia.

 

Next day when she called her husband he made excuses about being unable to talk - it's noisy here, he said, I'm getting drunk.

 

In reality he was marrying his bit on the side.

 

He came to see Parichart on the 13th and all seemed normal until she saw that he had another phone that Sanya claimed was his daughter's.

 

When he was in bed she took a look and all was revealed - he had another Facebook account and there were damning pictures of him getting married and in the marital bed with the other women.

 

When she confronted her rat of a husband all he said was:

 

"That's just the way I am".

 

Now the matter - and the phone evidence - is in the hands of divorce lawyers.

Why do they need to get married for this? He married the Mia Luang just after a year of dating. Then he marries the Mia Noi equally quick. Cheating is one thing and already bad enough. But why complicating it even further with a marriage that needs to get divorced? Wouldn’t it be easier to live the butterfly life without having to divorce a marriage whenever you change your mind yet again?

"Bigamy in Thailand, or marrying one person while still legally married to another, is not permitted (civil law section 1452) and is a criminal offense under the Thailand penal code (criminal offence to knowingly making a false declaration)."

 

Or was the second marriage some kind of unofficial temple ceremony. 

 

As an aside, I was surprised to learn that the latter applies to many Farang guys who claim to be "married" (unofficial marriages mean nothing here as the concept of a common law marriage doesn't exist under Thai law). In particular, I recall one "married" guy who was berating me, as some kind of virtue signalling, for not making "an honest woman" of my long time partner.

I think this was just a ceremonial wedding to the mia noi, and no.1 wife is proceeding with divorce from the legal marriage

I'm confused also, I know many Thai men that have 2 wives, most all get along fine together, often all get together both wives and kids from both

 

2 houses down the Village her husband comes most days for a hour of 3, but is always with is 1st wife at night,  1st wife son is 23. the 2 girls in the Village are now 19 and the other is 20.  they were babies when I moved here.....  the 1st son often also comes [how do you call her? dads 2nd wife]   there are at least 3 others I know with the same set up

Was either marriage registered or were they both just religious ceremonies?
