BANGKOK (NNT) - According to Fiscal Policy Office (FPO) director-general Pornchai Thiraveja, the previous 3 phases and the current phase of “Khon La Khrueng” or Half-Half copayment scheme are expected to generate some 400 billion baht to the economy.

The director-general said the scheme subsidizes 50% of foods, drinks, and general commodities with the total subsidy limited to 150 baht per person per day. With more than 26 million participants, the first 3 phases generated some 326 billion baht for the economy.

Mr. Pornchai expected that the 4th phase running from February 1 to April 30 will generate about 69.6 billion baht.

Meanwhile, the Finance Ministry also approved additional cash for state welfare cardholders and those in need of special aid as part of its ongoing relief efforts.

Deputy Prime Minister Supattanapong Punmeechaow said the Thai economy was likely to start recovering in the first half of this year due to the government’s effort to control the Covid-19 pandemic. Better vaccine coverage, financial support measures, and infrastructure development have been playing big roles in the country’s overall recovery.

It doesn't generate anything, but simply transfers tax dollars,  that is public money, to certain citizens of the public who buy specified things.  Subsidies do not generate new wealth, but only raises public debt.  It's a political ploy so the Gov't can take credit for doing something.

So it generates 400 billion baht on 50% discounted goods so it must have cost the government 400 billion baht as well.
