Lending Money to Thai Ladies

I got hit up by a Thai lady this morning on Messenger for a loan, which I ignored. 

 

In the afternoon, she posted on Facebook that she was making Triple Overtime at work, ie she was making the big bucks. 

 

In my experience, some of the loan requests come from their boyfriend complaining about lack of money. Maybe he wants a new motorcycle or just money for drinking.

You have to be strong when they are crying, they are rubbish with money mostly caused by sending too much home and for the monks and merit. I used to say ask the monks for some money back of course never happened

I never lend. I sometimes give without any delusions of payback. I also frequently utilize their Temp Services to help relieve their financial woes. I'm all for supporting the local economy!

When a woman asks you if you can lend her money, its just a polite way of saying "give me money".  Whereas, should you ever find yourself, for whatever reason, asking her for a loan - you can be sure she won't forget it.

 

The reason I gave one of my ex's her marching orders was that after 'borrowing' £600 from me during a trip back home which, when her usual pleas of poverty began, I did as I always had and cancelled the debt, only to find just 2 weeks later that she had accumulated £15,000 in her bank account.

During the following divorce proceedings, she had the nerve to tell me she knew the law and was entitled to 50%.  I knew the law a little better than the fool who told her that - she got 0%. Well actually she actually lost money - I presume she had to pay the fool (lawyer) that gave her the incorrect advice ????.

I did that once. A thai friend (girl) wanted to open small shop and asked for loan. She had a 1 baht gold necklace so I took that as part collateral. The shop failed and I never got my money back. I kept the necklace with hints from her many times how much she liked it. I sold it.

I have actually lent some money to a fellow Aussie expat as his transfer from Oz was delayed. Took a little while but I did get it all back after asking him. I did find out later that he had borrowed from a lot from others others and never paid back so I was lucky. He moved to Hua Hin and opened a bar so some of his lenders were hoping. He died so no paybacks.

Sometimes making a small loan, to someone who avoids you like the plague forever afterward so you never have to deal with them again, turns out to be one of the best investments a person can make.

I do not know how many dozens of times I have listened to Thai people complain to me that they have leant money to a Thai friend, and the loan has never been repaid.

 

On two occassions - firstly about 8 years ago, secondly 4 years ago - I leant some money to two female Thai friends - university-educated professionals who are government officials.  Not one Baht has been repaid.

Whats my motive for lending in the first place is where I start.

If I can't afford to never see money I give/lend to another ever again, don't give it in the first place ... This is one of the axioms I live by.

While I agree that actually lending money (especially to working girl) is a slim investment---giving where needed,  is a different matter

I find that Thai's in general are very generous in giving what little they have, Food especially. 

Have you ever looked at those "Give Me" pages that pop up when a farang hasn't got insurance cover---got into a fight or was attacked.

If you go into them they list the donations, its surprising the number of very small amounts that come in from Thai's.

I wonder how long you've lived in Thailand and still can't spell the name of the currency.

 

And maybe you know the wrong people. I've several times over the years lent money to family, up to 80,000 baht - that's baht - when, for example they've needed it for a business venture, and it has always been paid back on time. The only time it took longer was when someone, a Bangkok taxi driver, borrowed 20,000 for his daughter's wedding and it took him five years to pay it all back. But he did. He kept to his moral obligation over five years. That's quite impressive.

But would I lend to a non-family member? Absolutely not, in Thailand or anywhere else.

There's been a few stories of Thais being shocked by begpackers begging and helping them out because they assume to be begging means they are in big trouble, rather than just lazy.  I'm pretty sure that guy with the big leg got a ton of cash, mostly from Thais, which he promptly wasted.

 

But one group of Thais being helpful and generous doesn't prevent another group from ripping you off.
