The cost is paid in years of experience and through introspection, perhaps reading many books, during these years. And so, would you not happily trade your wisdom for callow youth, if only you could? (Building a life, avoiding major mistakes). In mid life we could "consolidate" our past achievements. In old age, we could care-free concentrate on the important things in life. Like: Play golf and try to get the attention of 20 year younger ladies. As this concept is reversed, clearly the Gods don't really like us. When life was short and brutal, those that lived long enough to amass knowledge were thought to be wise, simply because they knew a lot of stuff.
