The Royal Thai Police has set up 3,000 checkpoints so far to prevent traffic accidents during the seven dangerous days of Songkran to help stop drunk driving.

 

The Royal Thai Police estimated that 6.7 million cars will be headed for their hometowns during the five successive holidays (April 13th-17th), which was roughly 300,000 more than last year’s Songkran. Furthermore, Bangkok would see the greatest numbers of cars exiting the city on April 12th and re-entering on April 16th-17th.

Regarding road security, Police Lieutenant General Suwat Chaengyodsuk revealed that over 3,000 checkpoints and 80,000 operators were in operation nationwide to prevent shops from selling liquor outside of the legal selling period and traffic violations, especially drunk driving. Merchants and activities on a risk list would also be monitored closely by the officers in the area.

These checkpoints DO NOT prevent p**s heads from driving. They SOMETIMES catch someone who has been drinking if the guys manning them can be bothered.

Agreed, then there is the additional facet of all the issues and accidents they both directly and indirectly cause. 

 

Check-points after a blind corner or just over the brow of a hill - there’s nothing like creating an accident spot out of no-where !!!

 

Then there are the other issues of the tail-backs caused by the check-points which just delay people, frustrate them, some idiots don’t have the self control and try to make up time.

Well at least this year they haven't set up their checkpoint tent on the forecourt of the local booze wholesaler!

How does this prevent accidents, all I see is people sitting down or some of these checkpoints not even being maned. 

 

It's one thing to turn up to sit down and eat Som Tum while being paid, and another about being serious, e.g. breathalysers/arrests.

 

When they decide to follow how most western countries reduce road deaths, then perhaps things will change, but my lights will be out within the next decade so can't see that happening, but thanks for the annual short lived once again amusement.

Just imagine fantasize if all the many thousands of police manning the pointless checkpoints were all out patrolling the roads to spot dangerous driving. But in Thailand that's too much trouble. Easier to sit in a tent and do nothing.

No good doing that just for seven days , they must do their job All yea round 24 Hrs a day . and Make the Fines Stiffer ,revoke their license if they got one and impound their vehicle for six months for first offence  2nd + offence Crush the vehicle being a bike ,car ,van ,truck etc

Agreed. Those checkpoints serve no purpose. The number of deaths is up compared to last year already. Enforcement of the law must be strict the whole year around, not just on Songkran or the end of the year.
