Electric Vehicles in Thailand

Maybe when the secretary of the Chery CEO said, "Hey Boss, here is your itinerary for the new factory opening in Thailand," the Boss responded with a "What factory!!!???..... 😡 Who authorized the building of a factory in Thailand!!??.....I knew nothing of this!!....Cancel the opening ceremony for now until my underlings brief me!!"🤬

Your assumption Thailand will follow, is I believe, false.   Two completely separate markets with separate circumstances.   What kickstarted the EV revolution here was BYD & GW

Chinese EV manufacturers are adjusting their strategies and starting to increase prices in Thailand, with 2026 being the key time to measure real demand

BYD's best-selling compact hatchback, the Dolphin electric car, is priced at ฿599,900 (US$19,300) for the standard model as of Tuesday, February 24th, 33% higher than its 2025 low. The Atto 3 electric SUV is priced at ฿849,900, a 21% increase.

This marks the first time BYD has raised prices since entering the Thai market in 2022, but the leading Chinese electric vehicle manufacturer is not the only one to do

The Leapmotor B10 looks like a good car with good reviews, and is also RWD.

Overall quality looks better than Jaecoo but obviously it's not quite as cheap although still good value.

I am tempted by the Geely EX5 Max at 849.000 baht and the cheaper LeapMotor B10 Design - has anyone had a test drive or bought either of these models? Or has anyone come across a good comparison video?? Im hoping that the motor show will give me more incentive to invest in one of these models

Both brands are fairly niche in Thailand at the moment. I would be looking at a car that has sold many units like the MG 4 so spare parts will not be an issue further down the line.

After the MG 4 facelift is revealed at the motor show, there should be some good deals on the old model. Also the new interior looks a lot nicer and I don't think the price of the new model will be much higher, maybe around 599k (but it also depends if they have upgraded the battery or not).

I recommend you join some model specific FB groups as people report what they like and what they don't like about li as well as the manufacturers approach to warranty claims and what getting spare parts is like.

There is currently a 50,000 THB discount on the Dolphin so it’s 549,000 THB.

Some "Feb" 2026 registration stats are starting to appear on the DLT website. As expected February registrations are down which has been typical over the past several years. However what shocked me is how low Feb registrations are for "some" brands in comparison to Jan registrations.

First, just total registrations in Categroy RY1 for EV, ICE, and Hybrid

Registrations Category RY1 (passenger vehicles up to 7 passengers) January February

Now, some DLT registration snapshots "for some brands" and their models (will include EV and ICE/Hybrid in some cases).

Jan registrations was December 2025 sales with some models discounted by B150,000 due to EV 3.0

When prices increased last month what additional features did the Brands offer to justify the price increases answer nothing

If sales figures remain low over the next 3 months for existing models I expect ev manufacturers will ask government for a new incentive scheme

I agree, I think sales have dropped off a cliff. They are probably already asking the government for some support.

Prices are just normalising after the Government sweeteners were removed.

If you are looking for "extras" for the money you pay, compare Chinese BEV's to the legacy ICE vehicles or stay out of the market until you find something you like at a price you are prepared to pay.

Tesla is an interesting case study: It seems like the M3 Standard is cannibalizing other M3 sales - cant feel all that brilliant for their income statement...... Moreover, it seems that the Zeekr 7X is having the Model Y for lunch - for good reasons.

The abysmal model selection that is offered by Tesla is quickly becoming their Achilles heel.

BYD total for Feb was 295

Jaecoo 5 is the highest ranking EV Brand with 705

Toyota total for Feb was 20,557

https://www.car250.com/february-th-2026.html

my understanding is that Jaecoo 5 price increase was 40,000 THB

The 295 for BYD includes a BYD T3 van from Category RY3 Private Cargo Truck Category.....remaining 294 was in Category RY1 as shown in my earlier post. Although BYD had a ton, over the moon number of registrations in Jan (end of 2025 promotions/Motor Expo sales) Feb was a terrible month for BYD.

Expect people are gun-shy in buying with the Motor Show starting late March and with BYD having a tendency to offer some big price cuts during motor show type events. However, with EV 3.0 now in the history books and EV3.5 now in full effect the vehicle manufacturers probably have less motivation and latitude to offer big price cuts except on on select models.

Hopefully the Feb sales crash BYD experienced will spur BYD to offer some good promotions this month (Mar) and during the 25 Mar-5 Apr Motor Show to fight off competition. But then again, maybe the days of BIG price cuts are over except on a few select models.....the price war has cooled off to occasional small scale battles...etc. Time will tell.

How is the market for Changan Deepal S05 AWD?

Yea....and Zeekr registrations for Feb was higher than Jan. Zeekr focuses toward the premium market vs mass market.. I'm watching Zeekr as I'm interested in their model 7X....haven't decided which model I would prefer...that is the 7X Standard, 7X Long Range, or 7X AWD.

The AWD is loaded with all kind of HiSo goodies like automatic opening/closing doors, air suspension, has tons of horsepower, etc...but it uses a 100KWH NMC battery. These goodies add to the price and auto doors can be a pain in some cases and air suspension requires deep pockets when it needs repair out of warranty. The 7X Standard with 75KWH LFP battery or 7X Long Range with 100KWH NMC battery minus auto doors and minus air suspension interest me more. I haven't test drove a 7X yet....I only do test drives when I get super serious about a particular model. I'm lucky in having a large, full service Zeekr dealership only a 15 minute drive away. So if and when my interest goes thru the roof I will visit them to do a test drive (I've visited them once already in Dec 2025 just to checkout the dealership).

Right now it is between this model and Sealion 7 which are within hour budget! BYD a bit more tempting because of the size and also more of them on the road in Thailand

In Thailand, the BYD Sealion 7 is a larger, higher-volume seller compared to the Deepal S05. BYD currently maintains a significantly broader service network, though Changan's Deepal brand is expanding rapidly through its local manufacturing presence.

Size Comparison

The BYD Sealion 7 is a mid-sized SUV that is longer and wider than the Deepal S05, which is positioned as a more compact, city-focused SUV.

Sales in Thailand

BYD Sealion 7: Following its launch, it achieved immediate success, ranking as high as #6 in overall vehicle sales in January 2025 with a 2.8% market share.

Deepal S05: Launched later (around March 2025 at the Bangkok International Motor Show), it has seen growing interest but generally lower total volume than BYD's top models.

Market Context: BYD is the overall EV sales champion in Thailand, accounting for approximately one out of every three EVs sold. Changan (Deepal) has posted high growth rates but remains a smaller player by volume.

Service Stations and Reliability

BYD Service Network: BYD has a substantial lead in infrastructure, with approximately 115 outlets across Thailand as of mid-2024 through its partner Rêver Automotive.

Deepal Service Network: Deepal is still building its network but is supported by Changan’s long-term commitment to Thailand, including a local production plant. Some owners report positive experiences with "Prime EV" after-sales care in other markets, noting friendly service teams.

Reliability Perceptions: BYD is often praised for its "A-class" service and high spare parts availability globally. However, some Thai owners have expressed concerns about response times at service centers during peak periods or for technical software
