Fishermen, farmers and residents around the Mekong River in the Chiang Rai Province have expressed dissatisfaction and dismay at the adverse effects caused by China’s eleven dams on the river.

 

They have explained that the dams have disrupted the river and changed its nature, as they said the river would now tend to be more coercive and harsher on the wildlife.

 

The irregularities of the flow of river have taken their toll on fish, as they cannot spawn since the river has become unpredictable and the wet season can no longer be relied on.

 

The Chiang Khong Conservation Group said the local communities have urged authorities to tackle the issue; stakeholders, however, seem reluctant to take action to address the issue, adding that those responsible for the dams would say the problems are not caused by the dams.

Just wait and see when Papa Xi stops the flow and get these countries on their knees, not that they arent already. China is arming these rivers and waters just like they did to South China sea.

So many countries have woken up to the CCP. It's interesting. The CCP (and WHO) let covid spread around the world. Most of the world has now opened their greedy little eyes and there's a big push back against the CCP. Thailand is still bending over and taking it from uncle Xi.

The worst problem is not fishery. Rather, it is when massive ocean water went upstream because there is less water went downstream from the dam or while building the dam, which can cause permanent damage to the soil in the Mekong Delta region. That could cause a range of problem like high salt content in soil (aka alkali soil) which can not grow anything to small patch of farm land becomes desert eventually. Thailand needs to think twice in kissing CCP's bum. CCP is robbing you left and right and some Thai still prefers CCP as their masters. Mind boggling. 

If only they could pump Pattaya's constant excess rain water road flooding to somewhere useful !

About 10-12 years too late to be concerned. 

china only cares about china, they dont give two hoots for any other country and simnply use them to benefit themselves. Doesnt help when Thsiland just bend over and takes it from them either, those in charge are more interested in what they can personally make out of it rather than what happens to the country, personal wealth is simply more important, last thing those in charge want to do is upset their masters and lose their pay packets

This is a terrible  example  of environmental  bullying  and theft of resources

If you own the dams up river and are are immune to criticism from timid countries downstream you do what you want.

As you say, when water becomes more valuable the CCP will have another coercive weapon to wield.

Always and everywhere China will seek domination. This will not change as the global community remains complacent or just plain intimidated.

This whole scenario should have been resolved 15 years ago & should have been a resounding NO.

In another 15 years fresh water is going to be scarce & so much in demand that they will be lucky if they 

get a trickle, the Chinese will slowly kill the Mekong

The first item perhaps, but the second part in attempting to blame Chinese dams in now causing the unpredictability of the wet season is a bit of stretch even by Thai standards.

China plays give and take with its smaller neighbors.  They give them CoVid19 and Belt and Road, and they take Mekong waters.
