Daily News Thai Caption: Quickly return (the money)

A CCTV video published by Daily News showed a Thai son start scattering his mother's money all over a market area in NE Thailand in the middle of the night.

Many traders rushed to get the cash as Wuthisak "Pung" Sombat, 39, on the back of a friend's motorcycle dressed all in white, tossed 1,000 baht notes as if there was no tomorrow.

Earlier Pung had completely emptied his mother Somwong's account of 109,000 baht after stealing her ATM card.

He started small tossing a couple of notes. But as news spread among the traders at Sateuk, Buriram, market a throng gathered to pick up the cash.

Somwong reported the matter to Pol Lt-Col Nithiwat Khamnon who called for people to return the money. This was before the CCTV had been examined.

Station chief Pol Col Wachirawit Wannathanee said that so far just two people have come forward with 1,000 baht each.

He warned that if people don't return the money they may face charges of receiving stolen goods.

Reporters went to see the 70 year old mum who said she didn't want an ATM card linked to her account but was persuaded by bank staff that it would be convenient for her.

She opened an account in the sum of 110,000 baht with a 1,000 baht fee taken off.

She said it was lucky that about another 200,000 baht of her money was in a separate account that her son couldn't get to.

Police are hoping that the CCTV will identify the people who picked up the cash - mostly male and female traders as it was 3 am - enabling it to be returned to its rightful owner.

Daily News did not report on why the son should do this. Being dressed all in white seemed to be significant, notes ASEAN NOW.

I know this is chicken feed compared to what she lost - but where does a bank get off charging this to open an account and issuing an ATM??? It's standard to be around 300 - 350 baht for this.

Probably sold her some useless insurance.  ????

And then the hysteria and fun really starts and you end up in your hotel room with a babe ringing your bell!

Is that really the banks concern? People can decide for themselves what is convenient or not for them.

Educated people can decide for themselves, older uneducated females, like that woman, are easy taken advantage of by the bank employees who probably get commision. My mother in law, who sadly could not read nor write, was not allowed to attend school, when she was young.  In a normal world, YES you are right but do not forget this is Thailand

That was my point, it looks like she was pressured into doing something the bank profited from...

Was the son trying to become a politician? I hope he became a jail bird instead,

 what a jerk he is.

It might have been luckier if she had ensured her brat had no knowledge of the PIN!

He has a career of a politician on election day waiting ????

Amazing, the guy was 39 years old?

It seems to me that Thailand has more than its share of these Peter Pan types who never grew up.

Wells Fargo Bank in the US. Caught red handed telling their employees to sell more products, or else. You wanna make the rent this month? You wanna eat? Better sell, sell, sell. Anything, anyway you can. More credit cards, savings accts, loans. Many customers were unaware these were being signed up for in their name, added to their accts, until they started getting notices about them. Amazing they're still in business, yet got away with a slap on the wrist. Seems very Thailand doesn't it? Yet it's the good ol' USA. ????????????

In Europe some banks allow you to go up to 1000 + Euro in the red. (50.000 baht) Looks like convenient at first but at the end you will in the red each month and the interest rates are much higher than a normal loan.
