Police in Padang Basar, Songkhla in the far south of Thailand mentioned "lap nai" or microsleep as a possible cause of an apparent single vehicle accident that killed a woman and a six year old child.

An ever increasing number of accidents are being attributed to the condition where drowsy drivers drop off for a moment at the wheel with often devastating consequences.

Signs are up all over Thailand - usually in Thai only - that warn of the condition, especially on long straight stretches where drivers' attention can wander.

Thai Rath said that outside a water supply station a Nissan Almera plowed into a roadside lamppost.

They had pictures of the vehicle in flames.

Three people had been helped to hospital before rescue services arrived.

Nisachon Chusri, 40, and six year old Phatsachon Thianchai were pronounced dead in hospital.

Jakree Thianchai survived and is in a grievous condition in hospital in Hat Yai.

Local police said there were no brake marks on the road that led them to the "lap nai" conclusion though they admitted there could have been another cause.

They will interview Jakree if and when he recovers.

The police should not just come out with "lap nai" as the cause,

before they have even investigated what happened , and how

do most of these drivers that crash off the road ,end up hitting

a power pole or lamp post ,

RIP the lady and young boy.

Because the ones that don't hit something don't report an accident, just get towed out or drive out

RIP Lady and Child but 'Lap Nai' is now being used as an excuse as often as 'Brake Failure'.   Majority of Accidents here are caused by Brain Failure or just Lousy Driving Skills !

A slight chance of a medical incident causing a sudden accident, but other wise I'd say you're on point.

Yes, their attention can wander.....ONTO THEIR PHONES!!!!  I will say it again, they find the old "microsleep" excuse better face-saving (lol!) than to admit they were on/looking at their !@#$%^ phones!!  They have been sleeping for years driving. The idiot phones are why there is "An ever increasing number of accidents" you idiots!!

It’s sad that the Thai gov/society have bought into this micro sleep excuse…

just to deflect the real reason - bad driving behavior by poorly educated/trained drivers

accept individual driver accountability…..tired of trying to save face so let’s blame something other than driver responsibility to operate a vehicle
