Thai policeman sentenced to 50 years on bribery conviction

A police officer has been sentenced to 50 years in prison after he was found guilty, by the Central Criminal Court for Corruption and Misconduct Cases, of demanding and taking bribes, totalling 641,000 baht, from a soapy massage parlour in Bangkok.

 

According the press release, issued by the Public Sector Anti-Corruption Commission (PACC) today (Friday), the unnamed officer, attached to the Metropolitan Police Bureau, took 65 bribes from the parlour, in exchange for not taking legal action against it for alleged violations of the law.

 

The court found him guilty on all 65 counts and imposed a five-year prison term for each of the counts, bringing the accumulated jail time to 325 years.

Of the 230,000 policemen in BKK, there are only another 229,999 bent policemen to investigate...

I hate corruption, and I'm not too keen on cops either.

But considering their salary and the environment that they have to survive in,... plus what all their colleagues are up to, this is harsh in the extreme!

More like he got caught double dipping and not passing it on up the food chain so an example had to be made is my guess

He must have seriously upset those above him to get that sentence. Perhaps he didn't pass on sufficient share of the bribe money to his commanding officer/government officials/members of the judiciary and rather became just too greedy for his own good.

Let that be a warning to all other RTP minions that withholding more than their traditional share of extortion/bribe monies will not be tolerated by those in command and control.

Crazy Thailand. Murder and dismember a young woman...get 8 years. Take some bribes, as they all do, and get the equivalent of LIFE??? Think this place has either got it's priorities mixed up or these sentences mixed up. Typically Thailand.

Need follow up on this to see if he actually spends a day in jail. With the other hundreds of 'operations' he was shaking down, he has multi millions to buy his way out...

When it is governed/controlled by those with an absolute corrupt lust for money by any means possible, then the lust for punishments when that money is not distributed in traditionally accepted proportions, is greater than any other item of importance.

Personally met a guy in Hua Hin that put a hit on one his mafia loan shark boss'es customers.  He was out 1 year later ????

Something rather interesting seems to be taking place. It would appear there is some sort of rift between the army and the cops. The army has aways supported them and protected them and allowed, if not condoned corruption and malfeasance by the RTP. Now, all of a sudden? Wonder if anyone knows what is really going on? One thing is for sure. This is NOT about morality and justice. This is about something else.

I didn’t see the rank of the policeman mentioned, but guess not higher than sergeant. Normally, he would have collected and passed a lot of it upwards. The police never catch generals for instance. As others said, there other factors involved that we don’t know about yet.

Typical Mafia tactics. If the "made man" doesn't pass on a suitable portion of his ill-gotten gains, he can end up with no knee caps.

How convenient that the officer is....'unnamed'. Chances are....the sentence is a PACC publicity stunt and when the officer in question finishes paying the right people he'll be allowed to walk free. Since he's 'anonymous'....no one will ever be the wiser.

Aww at least they have stopped those gang road stops collecting 500 Baht for imaginary violations of road rules. And no more taking our licenses until we fork out the cash! I'm not

50 years for corruption, yet probably 3 months at the monastery, which is good. Probably he wasn't "kicking up" to the right boss. BUT you can kill, chop up, and sink a bar girl in a suitcase and get 8 years. Go figure, I can't.
