Does the Justice Department want to charge Trump? Here's what could happen

Liz Cheney’s powerful remarks at Thursday night’s Jan. 6 congressional hearing on the insurrection at the U.S. Capitol — which sounded a lot like a lawyer’s opening statement at a criminal trial — have renewed a debate in legal circles about whether the Justice Department could and should prosecute Donald Trump.

 

With a growing body of evidence that Cheney and others say points to criminal acts involving Trump’s efforts to overturn the 2020 election, Attorney General Merrick Garland may ultimately be faced with an excruciatingly difficult decision about whether prosecuting a former president is in the national interest. 

 

A person familiar with the matter told NBC News there have been conversations inside the Justice Department about the far-reaching implications of pursuing a case against the former president, should it come to that. So far, no public evidence has surfaced that Trump has become a criminal target.

Trump may be charged for trying to overthrow Georgia election by end of the month

Former President Donald Trump could face his first charges for trying to overturn the results of the 2020 election as early as this month.

 

On Friday, Fulton County District Attorney Fani Willis told the Associated Press that she expects to come to a decision on whether her office will charge the former president by June 30 for allegedly attempting to overthrow the results in Georgia.

 

"I certainly think that in the first half of the year that decision will be made," Willis said.

 

Willis has been investigating Trump's efforts to intervene in Georgia's 2020 election for more than 16 months.

Perhaps not from the Jan 6 Congressional Committee, which does not have authority for ‘criminal investigation’, but there is ample evidence that the Georgia AG is targeting Trump in a criminal investigation.

Well if there are sufficient grounds to charge him for criminal acts then not to do so could lead to similar actions, possibly by him again or others in the future?  The fact he is an ex president should have nothing to do with it as no one is above the law.  But of course that is wholly dependant as to whether or not there are sound grounds for criminal prosecution.

The Georgia law breaking is an open and shut case.... "Find me the votes & if you don't it won't be good for you" is straightforward. Should have been charged before new years 2020.

Agree it's open and shut.  Of course, Georgia wasn't the only place where Trump broke the law.  His lawlessness was on a national scale.  If Georgia can nail him....perhaps with pre-trial detention (wishful thinking), the rest of his crew will realize that the DOJ is not messing around.  His comrades will be singing like canaries to save their own as*.  Will be fun to watch.
