Canada Day - July 1st

OK, can't have a Canada thread without a Newfie joke:

Hey - we have a dog in Australia that has the same story. Hmmm wonder if they are related? :o

Good one Jet

CB

One thing I quickly learned while living in Oz was that Newfie and Tasmanian jokes are all interchangeable as are most Toronto/Sydney ones.

Absolutely correct and many of them originated from Polack or Irish jokes. In Chicago I heard a lot of Canadian jokes that had the same punch line. In Melbourne they tell Sydney Jokes and in Sydney they tell Melbourne jokes. The whole of Australia tells Queensland "Red Neck" jokes and Camberra as capital of Australia is just one big joke but without a funny ending.

The first ice hockey game I saw live was Toronto v Montreal in '81 Flew up fron San Diego with a couple of guys who were from Minnesota but wanted me to see real hockey.

So, did you see the Zamboni?

Zamboni as in the machine that sweeps and smooths the ice? Yes and why do you ask?

Oddly enough, the show is a hit in the Arab world :o

Ok just to settle a few things here:

2) I don't ever watch TV - especially in Thailand

Tasmanian Vasectomy

After having their 11th child, a Tasmanian couple decided that was enough,as they could not afford a larger bed. So the husband went to his doctor/veterinarian and told him that he and his wife/cousin didn't want to have any more children. The doctor told him that there was a procedure called a vasectomy that could fix the problem but that it was expensive.

A less costly alternative, said the doctor, was to go home, get a firecracker, light it, put it in a beer can, then hold the can up to his ear and count to 10. The Tasmanian said to the doctor, "I may not be the

smartest man in the world, but I don't see how putting a firecracker in a beer can next to my ear is going to help me." "Trust me," said the doctor.

So the man went home, lit a firecracker and put it in a beer can. He held the can up to his ear and began to count:

"1"

"2"

"3"

"4"

"5"

at which point he paused, placed the beer can between his legs, and resumed counting on his other hand.

Port Power Vasectomy - modified for accuracy :o

After having their 11th child, a Port Power couple decided that was enough,as they could not afford a larger bed. So the husband went to the free medical clinic and told doctor that he and his sister didn't want to have any more children. The doctor told him that there was a procedure called a vasectomy that could fix the problem but that it was expensive.

A less costly alternative, said the doctor, was to go home, get a firecracker, light it, put it in a beer can, then hold the can up to his ear and count to 10. The Power suporter said to the doctor, "Listen mate, I know I am as dumb as dog doodoo, but I don't see how putting a firecracker in a beer can next to my ear is going to help me." "Trust me," said the doctor.

So the Port Power supporter went home, lit a firecracker and put it in a beer can. He held the can up to his ear and began to count:

"1"

"2"

"3"

"4"

"5"

at which point he paused, placed the beer can between his legs, and resumed counting on his other hand.

Ok, ok, calm down....no offense was intended. :o

Port Power? I thought this thread was about Canada. We have alot of ports, but Power ain't one of them. But, since that joke is so corny, I don't really care, eh. CVic, you better explain Corner Gas. (Geez, Cawboy sounds a little ornery today.)

Do we have anything else famous? Banff. Ann Murray. Hosers, eh. Canadian bacon, eh. Mais oui, maple syrup. Joni Mitchell, eh. kd lang (she grew up near my southern granma, but nobody there likes her because she is gay and a vegetarian, no nos in cattle country); funnily enough, I think they filmed Brokeback in Alberda, eh. Tar sands. English-speaking Montreal. The biggest pysanki in the world (Vegreville). Bob & Doug McKenzie and The Beer Hunter. Do you know how to play beer hunter? Get a six-pack of Labatt's Blue (cans). Take one and shake the sh*t out of it, then mix up all the cans. Everyone picks a can and well... 555

Calgary Stampede and my fav sport after hockey and American football, chuckwagon races (the two outriders have to pick up all the stuff like the stove and put em in the wagon before they can start, then they got stay near their wagon and tried not to get killed by the other wagons). Michael Buble. Sockeye salmon. Tuktoyuktuk. Bryan Adams. Saskatchewan. Head-Smashed-In Buffalo Jump. Bare-Naked Ladies. Medicine Hat. Crash Test Dummies. Drumheller and the Hoodoos and dinosaurs -- the Badlands. Sointula (Finnish for utopia). Neil Young. THE BAND! Ooooooooow, I do love The Band. Remember the Last Waltz, with Bob, Dr John, Joni...sigh, eh. High taxes. The most lakes of any country in the world (lots of good fishin). hel_l's Gate. Hockey.

"I went to a boxing match the other night and a hockey game broke out."

OK, I'm bored now.

OK, here are some snaps. Kan Win needs to come to Canada.

That building in the background is where Canada Immigration processes visas.

In Saskatchewan they prefer big teapots. By the time you get to Ontario you'll probably have a decent breakfast assembled.

In one episode of

the town tries to compete with other "world's biggest" towns with a statue of a large garden implement to represent their agricultural heritage. They removed it after headlines reported that Dog River was now home to the world's biggest dirty hoe.

Further west are the rocky mountains. Here a thunderstorm's downdraft meets a mountain wave crossing Mt. Rundle, with cool effects.

I wasn't offended - just confused. I apologise if I came across angry. Sometimes without the benefit of non verbal clues it can get misunderstood.

I still have no idea who or what corner gas is. I am guessing it is a comedy show on tv?

Thanks for the pics and info, CVic. Told you, you gotta tell Cawbie what Corner Gas is.

Medical complaint? :o

Corner Gas is Canada's most popular comedy show, based in the fictional small town of Dog River Saskatchewan.

Corner Gas is the only gas station for 40 kilometres in any direction (according to the first season episode "Ruby Reborn"). Brent Leroy (Brent Butt) is the proprietor of the station and Wanda works at the station's convenience store as a retail assistant. An adjoining coffee shop (The Ruby) is owned by Lacey Burrows (Gabrielle Miller), who inherited it from her aunt.

The series was created by Canadian comedian Brent Butt who came up with the idea for the series after wondering what his life would be like if he hadn't pursued stand-up comedy (he would still be in a small town in Saskatchewan pumping gas).

The series includes cameo appearances by a large number of Canadian celebrities, including two sitting prime ministers, Paul Martin and Stephen Harper, the only fictional sitcom (as opposed to sketch comedy series) in which sitting prime ministers have appeared. The sitting premier of Saskatchewan, Lorne Calvert, has also appeared in an episode, as has former Governor-General Adrienne Clarkson.

The show is screened internationally in Abu Dhabi, Algeria, Australia, Bahrain, Chad, Cyprus, Egypt, Finland, Iran, Iraq, Israel, Jordan, Kuwait, Lebanon, Libya, Mauritius, Morocco, Oman, Qatar, Saudi Arabia, Somalia, Sudan, Syria, Tunisia, United Arab Emirates, United States, and Yemen.

Ok - now I understand, thanks for the explanation. I think it would go well in Oz, we have the same mentality of small isolated towns. I will ask some friends there if they have seen it, curious as to what they think about it.

thanks

During one of my flights from Chicago to Narita we had exceedingly clear weather while flying over the Yukon Territory. I recall looking down in an attempt to spot some hint of civilization. Nothing. Quite awesome to see that much natural unspoilt beauty.

I always wanted to do a drive from the lower 48 thru Alberta, BC, and the Yukon up to Alaska. Would be awesome. I did visit Banff (Canada's first national park and the world's third), Kootenay and Jasper. Took a halftrack onto one of the glaciers. Again, awesome.

Beautiful country. And that's a huge understatement. :o

Is that last photo yours? Very well done if so :o

I'm embarrassed to say, I can't name any of those mountains...

Shame on you ! :D

There's only about 84,694 mountains like that in BC alone ! We have so many, we lent a few to Alberta (actually, we put them up there to help keep all them darn easterners out of the best part of the country) ! :o

Didn't work :o

Well that day has arrived. Started out with a big breakfast, now sitting back enjoying an early beer and listening to some classic Canadian Music, The Guess Who, Steppenwolf, Chilliwack, The Band, Joni Mitchell, etc.

Off to a BBQ soon, then down to the harbour for fireworks. I'll post some pics later.

:o Lent some to Alberta; that's pretty good, Kd. They did get Waterton tho; they can keep Banff. I missed the pancake breakkie but hope to see the fireworks. Just had lunch, the sun is shining for a f** change and it's actually warm outside. I will now join CV in a toast to Kerryd and all our Canuckers on board: Happy Canada Day! (I even bought a flag for C$0.69; what a nerd.) Awaiting your pics, CV. Get the Mounties musical ride in there, wouldya? :D

Yes, Gods bless everyone in uniform.

Kerryd, you get two brews for Canada Day? :o

Well, I'm not a beer drinker, but the rest of the lads (and lassies) that were able to make it got to partake. I was actually working most of the day, but that's OK. Someone else got to have a little fun instead. I'll make up for it when I get back to LoS in a couple of weeks.

Tim Horton's was giving away free coffee and maple donuts too ! (missed out on those as well, but that was a personal decision. The waist-line doesn't really need any extra incentive to grow larger !) :D
