Four admitted to hospital, one dies after using cannabis following decriminalisation

Four people were admitted to hospital for treatment after cannabis overdose and one later died of heart failure in the first known cases of hospitalisation after the decriminalisation of cannabis use in Thailand on June 9th, according to Bangkok Governor Chadchart Sittipunt.

 

The governor received a report today (Tuesday) from the Bangkok Metropolitan Administration’s (BMA) Medical Services Department that a 17-year-old and a 25-year-old have been admitted to city-run hospitals for treatment of heart palpitations after consuming cannabis. A 16-year-old was admitted to intensive care, allegedly following a cannabis overdose. Additionally, a 51-year-old man suffered chest pains after using cannabis and later died of heart failure.

 

The cases have prompted the BMA to consider measures to protect students at its 436 schools, including the idea of declaring schools and eateries in front of the schools to be cannabis-free zones, with signs erected in front of the schools, he said.

I think terming it as an overdose is a bit naive, maybe a good ol' fashione "whitey". The poor fella who died, i would guess had something pre existing.

 

Ive never heard of people going to hospital with bad reactions to weed after a stop in an Amsterdam coffee shop.

I mentioned yesterday, just wait until it hits the teenagers.   This place is looking at so many problems with weed they have no clue.  There are so many irresponsible drivers now, just wait all these stoners on the roads motorbikes and cars.  All such a terrible idea thinking it will be a wonderful tourism money grab.  Shameful really and anyone that supports this is clueless just wait and see.

I did in Amsterdam and I used to be a pothead.

The newer stuff is like a different drug.

If i had a teenager i would be much happier if he/she/it took Cannabis over Yaba

any day of the week.

Why would any one want to drive after using Cannabis?

No,anyone supporting this law is not clueless,just look around you what is happening in the world.

Alcohol does much more damage to the young people,have you ever tried weed?

As with anything, there is a big difference in a reaction/death "after" taking something, and a reaction/death because of taking something. This same rhetoric was around to do with vaccines, "he died after having a vaccine, not from a vaccine".

No there are a lot more choices,there are a lot of different drugs kids are exposed to these days.

They also consume alcohol and some sniff different things,mushrooms are also on the menu.

Kids want to try stuff so "neither" in a lot of cases is not an option.

Nah, there's chance that your kid won't get into methamphetamines simply because weed is not available.  They're super bad so you have a responsibility to make sure they aren't tempted.

Probably the dead man was a smoker and / or with preexisting conditions. Also no mention how much and often he consumed cannabis.

So I call it BS. But that's Thai news. Make up a headline with some sh!t to generate clicks and mislead the general public.

As we all know correlation does not imply causation.

In the UK, deaths are ridiculously low for such a widespread drug. It is estimated there are at least 10 million brits classified as regular users (vastly underestimated in my opinion) and 2020 was their worst year for weed deaths at 36 • England, Wales: cannabis deaths 1993-2018 | Statista. Normally it's in the low teens and twenty's (this is also on the back of how they actually classify a 'weed death'). To me this story smacks of fearmongering as the poor chap was 51 and I'm guessing, not in the best of health. Saying that, I wonder whether it's exactly that; creating a bit of fearmongering amongst a relatively naïve population as a way to hammer across a point? 

Weed usage amongst those too young to even have a fully matured brain is very well documented and not to be encouraged. So how to discourage a curious generation from getting involved in what looks like a perfectly legal drug? 

Maybe a few scare stories might do the trick.

the incidents of that compared to the sheer amount of weed on earth is laughable.  one time i found a razor in my halloween candy.....
