Nearly 6 in 10 Americans say Trump should be charged for Jan. 6 riot--poll

With the first full week of hearings for the House select committee's investigation into the Jan. 6 attack on the U.S. Capitol now complete, nearly 6 in 10 Americans believe former President Donald Trump should be charged with a crime for his role in the incident, a new ABC News/Ipsos poll finds.

 

Six in 10 Americans also believe the committee is conducting a fair and impartial investigation, according to the poll.

 

In the poll, which was conducted by Ipsos in partnership with ABC News using Ipsos' KnowledgePanel, 58% of Americans think Trump should be charged with a crime for his role in the riot. That's up slightly from late April, before the hearings began, when an ABC News/Washington Post poll found that 52% of Americans thought the former president should be charged.

Why not, they should, but they probably won't for one reason or another, a combination of reasons, precedent, lack of evidence, etc. A conspiracy prosecution would be the DOJ's best bet.

 

Squeeze Eastman to roll on Trump. turn this into a huge mess, but muck up Trump (maybe) if he wants to be POTUS again.

Did you know there's a whole branch of mathematics called statistics based around poll samples and extrapolating them to predict the mood of the entire nation? Every credible poll also carries a rider which calculates the margin of error or confidence level. You appear to be trying to imply that only 545 people who were directly asked would have answered that way and leave open the (im)possibility that every other person in the population might not agree. Absurd would be the only way to describe that assertion.

I think they will charge Trump because they need to establish who was ultimately  responsible for the death of several people as a direct result of the riot.

I'd hazard a guess that locking him up (but not Mrs Clinton??)  would move the country one step nearer anarchy, if not intermittent revolutionary skirmishes.

They don't need to have followed the proceedings themselves. Most of those who watched the riots live on TV would have formed an opinion as to what happened on that day. These proceedings are only confirming what most people already knew.

This is a good sign, but it's disappointing that there still seems to be around 40% of US citizens that still are acceptive of, even if not fully supportive of, Trump. IMO, he and all his followers are an anathema to the USA. ????
