With the COVID crisis now receding, Yala City Municipality is working on getting quickly back on its feet with a series of events aimed at boosting the economy and people’s well-being.

 

Following on from its second marathon taking place on July 31, the city of Yala is going to hold “Pakaian Melayu”, an exhibition of traditional Malay textiles and costumes, on 5-7 August at the TK Park learning park building.

 

The three-day event will feature sale booths, exhibitions, fabric design, costume design contests, and fashion shows, with the winning designs displayed on the runway on the last day of the event. On the academic front, there will be seminars and workshops to groom the new generation of young designers.

 

The event is expected to draw about 6,000 participants from Thailand, Indonesia, Malaysia, and Brunei, according to the mayor of Yala City municipality Pongsak Yingchoncharoen.

Sure, that´s a perfect way of handing over a part of the country to Islam without saying it straight out.

Three quarters of the population are Malay-Muslims, so Islam is already the majority religion.  

And a photo of a female not wearing a mask, hijab or burka, along with being unaccompanied.  What is the world coming to ????

Southern Thailand isn't Afghanistan.

 

Though many Muslim women do wear a tudong or hijab, which is a head scarf and doesn't cover the face. There are a few that wear an abaya and even fewer the niqab, full length cloaks and veils that cover the face but not the eyes. I've never seen anyone in a burqa. A few Muslim men wear a thobe, the long ankle length shirt, together with the little cap or kufi, they're the ones accompanied by a wife in an abaya or niqab. 

 

But there is no compulsory dress code down here.

Actually, in Narathiwat I notice up to 30 percent of men wearing Islamic clothes. Most of them have regularly dressed wives. Only when you see a man in all white, sporting a long beard, can you be reasonably assured of his wife in all black, wearing niqab.
