Prayut Shrugs Off Pressure To Step Down After Eight Years In Power

PRIME MINISTER PRAYUT Chan-o-cha today (August 8th) shrugged off sustained pressure for him to step down since his eight years in power maximumly provided by law might possibly end later this month.

 

Prayut who apparently is not going to step down anytime soon only advised the debatable issue surrounding his eight years in power be finally determined by the Constitutional Court and declined to make comments about it himself.

 

Neither did Prayut respond to his critics’ suggestion that he follow in the footsteps of the late statesman Prem Tinsulanonda who resigned in 1988 after he had assumed his premiership for eight years.

 

According to Prayut’s critics, the embattled premier will have finished his eight-year tenure by August 24, the date on which he orchestrated a coup as army chief and named himself an unelected prime minister in 2014.

The military will still be in power even if he steps down. For a long time.

Could be worse than him though probably difficult to achieve that distinction.

I strongly believe that the EC and the Constitutional Court will rule in favor for him.. at least he doesn't need to step down now and can stay till the next elections. They will say it is only a few months left and with the upcoming Apec meeting difficult to replace him. THe constitutional court will rule that he can stay as an elected PM for another 4 years..The firstyears he took over the country and was not an elected PM.. His friends will not leave him alone believe me...Only nature can get id of this man

I know he said he'd only stay 6 months, but come on - 6 months... 8 years... What's the big deal? Why do they keep bothering him with these little details?

Only have to look over the borders Myanmar and Cambodia to a lesser degree. He should go however but as been said he like Putin will change the rules to hang on to power. And of course the Army will always back him up.

No, Prayut's illegitimate ascent to power will always prejudice any kudos for doing good for Thailand during a rough 8 years of dealing with economics during Covid. But, I bet Yingluck would have done worse. Why? You don't get to become a four star general unless you're smart and capable of getting things done. Yingluck didn't have equivalent experience. In the US, our best years were under five star General Eisenhower, as president. And helping him grease the skids was five star General Marshal, as Sec'y of State, then Sec'y of Defense -- with his Marshal Plan to bail out a failing Europe. So, don't sell short retired generals as incompetent -- particularly Prayut.

 

So, if Prayut wants to hang around longer than 8 years, so be it. Don't think he's done a bad job, all things considered. And don't know who out there could have done a better job, or would do a better job -- if somehow such a fine candidate would even run... No, keep Prayut, a known entity, for as long as we can. After that, things will become stinky.

Many of us would disagree, wholeheartedly. There are 2,200 generals in Thailand. Do you really think all are smart and capable? There are countless areas where Prayuth has failed, as a leader. He is moving the country backwards, at an alarming pace. Thanathorn, or a similarly smart and progressive candidate would and could do far better. Accepting the status quo, just because it is there, when he is regressive, oppressive and incapable, is not a good idea.
