Monkeypox likely to follow in HIV footsteps

BANGKOK (NNT) - A doctor from Chulalongkorn Hospital has warned that monkeypox could potentially spread in the same manner as HIV, with nightlife venues being at high risk of becoming transmission hotspots.

In his Facebook post, Dr. Thira Woratanarat, a medical doctor who specializes in epidemiology and health promotion at the Faculty of Medicine, Chulalongkorn University, said monkeypox shares overlapping features with other infectious diseases such as COVID-19, as the virus spreads through environmental contamination and surfaces.

Dr. Thira warned that the monkeypox outbreak has a high chance of being prolonged, despite not being as widespread as COVID-19. Outbreaks within a community are also likely once a case emerges, especially at nightlife venues, tourist attractions, and overnight accommodations without adequate hygiene measures.

He said genetic materials of the monkeypox virus can be detected in respiratory droplets, blood, urine, and semen of patients, making it possible for the virus to spread to other humans through fomite transmission, which is when a person contracts the virus from touching a contaminated surface. This mode of transmission is however less frequent than intimate contact such as sexual activities.

Comparing monkeypox to HIV, Dr. Thira said superspreader events of monkeypox are likely to occur within at-risk populations and locations. However more widespread transmission remains a possibility with inadequate disease surveillance.

Despite the lower chance of transmission through surfaces, Dr. Thira continues to encourage the general public to be cautious and take preventative measures, which include the use of face masks and alcohol sanitizers.

I think the topic is largely  about whether MP will become mote common in other than gay men outside of Africa including Thailand.

.

I think comparing directly to HIV spreading history is premature and specious. We don't know enough yet but it is wise to keep an eye on it.

Also HIV is not spread by SKIN CONTACT.  It appears MP is.

Rubbish, it was very well known and publicised right from 1984. You're just trying on some right wing slur here with your reference to "wokeism".

1981 - I remember  it well- then there was Rock Hudson the first famous victim of aids- a famous closet homosexual. I have and more sadly had friends in the gay  community one who died in 82 in London.  But the media misinformation to cover up truth out of good  Liberal intentions IS an early example of covering the truth or rather not admitting it.

So nothing like HIV but a good scaremongering headline

And a graph that of course must always go upwards, it is  a linear scale when usually a logarithmic one was used (Covid times).

Also the graph is "World", Thailand would have been more useful

Yeah, like that famous liberal Ronald Reagan who did all he could to suppress info, research.. Shame on you for you lazy approach to what went down and knee jerk reaction to blame it on "liberals Intentions": WTH is that supposed to mean anyway?  defaulted on payments to WHO meant to fight against the disease, did not even mention AIDs in a speech until 1985.

You need to wake up and smell the coffee. Signs here of severe disconnect from logic, facts, and reality. Try this article on Ronnie and AIDS (from history. com)

Revisionist history with very questionable intent.

Again,  as someone that lived the history the moment it was known that the main risk factors were unprotected butt sex and shared needles, the people at risk welcomed that knowledge immensely. Of course there were controversies over things like whether to close the bath houses or not. The arguments to keep open were that they could be used for safer sex education and testing. People still did risky stuff in many other places of course open baths or not. Much of the general public incorrectly still believed it was much more casually transmitted for many years creating unfair stigma for gay people to add to the misery of the plague.

Yes Reagan was very horrible on HIV but we had  leaders and health officials  at local levels at least in the hot spots that could at least get out good prevention info and testing as early as possible. It took several years for effective treatments and weirdly still no vaccine. The earlier years of treatments were a disaster doing more harm than good.

I don’t think Reagan was very homophobic personally but his right wing base was and it helped him more politically to ignore HIV than to address it.
