Can I, the day after arriving in Thailand, extend my tourist visa (or visa exemption) or does this need to be done within a certain time frame?

Normally couple of weeks prior to expiry of permit.

Can try earlier..

 

I extended my visa exempt entry 7 days after landing - This was done at the small tourist friendly immigration office in Patong, Phuket - No problems at all.

What office do you go to for visa exempt extension?

If staying in Nonthaburi you would apply at the immigration office there.

Nonthaburi immigration. Generally speaking, you need to attend the immigration office where you're staying (as per your current TM30 address report).

Within 24 hours of your arrival there, officially, so prepare for a fine unless you can convince them that you stayed elsewhere and just arrived before filing it.

It looks like it will be a fine????
