Survey – Bangkok among 5 best cities for expats to live and work in 2022

Bangkok has been ranked 5th among the world’s top 10 cities for expats to live and work this year, according to the global expat index by the online language learning platform Preply.

 

The survey assesses 60 popular expat destinations using 11 relevant relocation metrics, including the average monthly salary, how safe the area is, the average length of time to learn the language fluently, the cost of living, income tax, connectivity, leisure activities and more.

 

Kuala Lumpur in Malaysia came out on top, thanks to its affordable living costs and many leisure opportunities, followed by Tbilisi in Georgia, Lisbon in Portugal, Dubai in the United Arab Emirates, and Bangkok Thailand.

 

The report shows that the cost of living as an expat is relatively high in Bangkok, at £1,725, and the average monthly salary after tax is £492. After Kuala Lumpur, however, Bangkok has the most affordable monthly rent for a 1-bedroom city centre property, at £451, and a meal costs just £2.11.

Never understand why Dubai is considered so good. I worked there and never found it to be a great place.

Hard to believe a Muzzy country/city is #1, if taking AN member's top concerns of:

Alcohol

Hooker ... not necessarily in that order ????

All relative, but Krung Thep certainly is NOT, if wanting a comfy lifestyle.

 

Cheaper then other metros, possibly, but you do get what you pay for sometimes.

 

I hate when they state, food is cheap, meal is 60 baht, as I've rarely had a plate/bowl of food for 60-100 baht that I would call a meal.  A meal = 'filling', something to hold you over till next meal, 3-5 hrs away.   Not come home from the restaurant, and make yourself a P&J a half hour later ????

One week is long enough in that place in 50 years time it will be under water if they don’t do something about the constant flooding . I will stick to island living and just go there for the occasional weekend

My brother has worked there for more than 10 years and loves the place he has a far better life style than when he worked in the U.K.

Been living in Bangkok for a while.  The costs in the article are way off.  And making no sense. 
The only thing I find saving money compared to the states is on rent. 
Of course I can save a lot of money if I wanted to eat street food everyday.  And live in a little room.

After living and working in KL for 15 years, I don't see much leisure opportunities than Bangkok.

50 and 60 baht restaurant meals.

 

If you cannot find them try walking around. Heaps of them.

For all the miserable naysayers on this forum who I wish would just leave, and from someone who has lived in Bangkok for over 40 years, I love Bangkok and Thailand as a whole, for reasons beyond the understanding of the moaners. Any survey is irrelevant to me.

Your choice, but the air pollution & congestion would get to me after short time, especially the air.  Congestion & flooding can almost be avoided, but one does have to breathe, and preferably without wearing an N95 all day when out & about for way too many months.

As you mentioned 60-100 baht its really not much.  Ok for a wee girl for a school meal.

 

It's usually an oily water mixture with a little sinewy meat mix laden with sugar, MSG, and salt. 

 

Fine in an emergency but if thats your daily diet expect diabetes and high blood pressure to follow.

Thanks for that information. Might have to move to somewhere better. Where in Thailand do you live?
