Pattaya authorities give update on road expansion project on Beach Road

Pattaya — The road expansion project on Pattaya Beach Road will ease traffic congestion and allow 200 more vehicles to park alongside the beach, Pattaya Deputy Mayor Manoch Nongyai said.

The project has a budget of 166 million baht. The road would be expanded by 2 meters in width, according to Manoch, and would enable residents and tourists to park 200 more vehicles alongside the beach.

Trees would also be planted to beautify the area and provide shade for beachgoers.

So they reclaim the beach to build more roads? 

They keep losing sight of the fact that you can't interfer with beaches and oceans without concequences. 

Sand migrates many km up and down (I think around 100km) the shore line. Once you start 'playing' around with shore lines there's bound to be tears.

Looks great now, so let's widen the road, but, if you look at the origional bay shoreline pictures that's how it was and will end up, without massive money spends. Not just Pattaya Beach, but say 100km up and down the coast.

Next we can cut down the trees and put in an elivated tram/train track, then expand the beach and put in more trees, then ....

I'm no beach expansion specialist but maybe if they don't let beach road be a parking lot it might ease traffic congestion.

It took them years to realise that allowing cars to park on the right beach side was a good idea, i haven't noticed it as a problem

No, it took a pandemic and dearth of tourists. Losing one lane and traffic stopping as parkers maneuver into position is hardly likely to improve flow. Pattaya really needs ways to reduce traffic flow into central town, rather than accommodating more of it. Funny that, when the extra lane was built some 7-8 years ago, it was to improve traffic flow, now apparently allowing vehicles to park in that lane will do the same?

'Road expansion' Al-La Pattaya style means dug up roads like in WWII truncheons that will be there for ever, restricted traffic, parking and activities, an eye sore that will put off any good impressions on tourists...

Now that the country is re-opened to tourists, let’s dig it up. They had a couple of years with reduced traffic to pull this off.

I see traffic issues getting worse rather than improving in Pattaya. Walking Street used to be pedestrians-only after a certain hour, now if I'm not mistaken traffic is allowed all the time.

All over the world towns and cities are converting streets to pedestrian walks. I've watched dozens of virtual walk videos, mostly of places in Europe but also elsewhere. Even Manhattan has narrowed streets and given pedestrians more space, no doubt in some cases due to the pandemic.

Thailand though, as so often, does the opposite and wants to widen a road where one should not even be in the first place. Just imagine how much more pleasant Beach Road would be if it were pedestrianised, with limited access to vehicles for deliveries only. Second Road is easily wide enough for two-way traffic to compensate.

 

And there's still plenty of money to be made from re-paving the entire road, as they did with Walking Street. The only downside is that it might take them several years to complete a job that the Chinese would finish in less than a month.

Pattaya's digging up roads backhanders committee are a force to be reckoned with, TIT

"clueless boffins" being here years same works being repeated due to rampant corruption.

Many other solutions but they dont suit the committee

All helps to keep the main tourist attraction busy.

Correct.  It's why prices are always higher in eateries/hotels/shops which used to have a sea-view but now don't.

Totally agree.  It was a huge mistake to eliminate a traffic lane and allow beachside parking.  Looks awful and blocks the view of the beach and ocean--plus impedes traffic flow.  Now they just want to compound the problem--adding more concrete and losing more of the established trees.   They should be looking for ways to reduce traffic on Beach Road, instead of adding to it--such as building more parking garages and a trolley system.

Like the bali hai parking garage? the biggest flop since records began so unlikely they'll repeat that mistake

What a shambles. Drove down there yesterday evening. Cars trying to maneuver into gaps and blocking traffic and then a small truck double-parked meant only one lane.  Second road also a mess.

I know work has to be done but they don't finish one  job before starting another.

    Just because one project didn't work doesn't mean you reject ever doing something similar.  Hopefully, they learned from their mistakes.  I suggest they bulldoze the decrepit, dysfunctional, too-small City Hall building with inadequate parking and build a large parking garage there, with a trolley terminal.  Park your car and grab the trolley to the beach.  Other parking garages can also be built in the south and central parts of town, also linked with public transportation.   Eliminate parking on Beach Road entirely and expand the sidewalks, adding many more shade trees and other greenery on both sides of the road.

     City Hall does not need to be in that location.  Choose a large plot and build a new City Hall that brings together other government agencies that are scattered around the city--all of them now in mostly inconvenient locations in too-small facilities with inadequate parking--PEA, PWA, DBD, Land Office, that Tax Office off of Thepprasit Road, etc.   One stop shopping to do all your government business.  Pattaya has grown so much it needs a major upgrade on its government buildings.

I don't believe it is all about traffic flow... it is about creating a venue for the many festivals and markets that make getting into town a nightmare.

    I applaud the city for planning special events to bring visitors to Pattaya.  However, there has been little or no thought by the city regarding traffic flow to handle the large crowds, which do indeed 'make getting into town a nightmare'.  Adding 200 parking spaces is a drop in the bucket and will just make Beach Road more of a traffic nightmare and much less visually-appealing.  

    Even now, with international arrivals to Thailand at less than 8 million, vs. 40 million in 2019, roads can be traffic-clogged.  What will they be like when tourism gears back up?  It's so short-sighted to plan for a couple hundred people to park their car next to the beach while at the same time creating clogged, stalled traffic for many more other cars trying to get to their destinations.

    Same story with North Pattaya Road,  one of the major roads to get to all the popular new developments in the north Pattaya Beach area.  A lot of the road is already designated no parking.  But, here and there, parking is allowed; so instead of 3 lanes of traffic each way there are only 2.   A few parked cars are catered to, while thousands of others are stuck in the congestion.  Instead of 3 lanes of traffic--and more cars--getting through signaled intersections, fewer do, creating more back-ups and the need for longer traffic signal sequences, which creates even more back-ups.  Pattaya has reached a traffic density where it can no longer have parking on some of its major roads.
