With greed and stupidity being the two main facilitators of a scam, It looks like Thailand really does have the potential to become the South East Asian  "hub" of something after all

so how the penny dropped and how they knew it was all scam?

That is not explained.

They were sending some packages to chiang mai.

what was in them?

why they were scared so much and why they did not go to their police station to clarify matters?

Very valid point,       there is something strange about this story  even the way its written isn't quite right ..

"Instead she got sucked into believing that she would be jailed for sending a package (probably containing drugs)"

Wouldn't be surprised if it was made up

As an aside .... shows just how lucrative the medical industry is in Thailand.  Over 4 Million Aussie dollars.

Shows how accepting citizens are in paying police too, even though in this case it was a scam

A scam where the scammers purported to be extortionate police.  Wow.  TIT.

Of course, part of the problem is that folk are accustomed to the RTP asking for (or taking) money to see problems disappear - so perhaps that what these folk were thinking, maybe a clever scam after all ????

The daughter thought they were facing jail and after telling her mum - a former doctor at a hospital in Chumphon - they decided to comply with requests they thought were being made by the police in Chiang Rai.

Together they transferred 101,871,381 using four accounts between 25th and 29th September.

And these are educated people?

Become a doctor... ????

That doctor who was seriously overpaid needs a brain scan, so does the daughter

Was thinking the same.  Maybe the daughter needed the money pronto and couldn't wait for her mommy to croak.  Because seriously, no one can be that dumb.
