RTP chief marks National Police Day: Calls on cops to be professional and proactive "so the people love us"

Thailand's national police chief spoke to his men Sunday in an address to mark the auspicious occasion of National Police Day. 

 

Pol Gen Damrongsak Kittipraphat's one year tenure - because he'll be 60 next year - began on October 1st.

Within a week a former drug taking cop had massacred dozens of people in the north east. There have also been many cases of corruption embarrassing the RTP. 

 

Now Damrongsak used his address to bolster good feelings in the ranks in an attempt to restore public confidence, notes ASEAN NOW.

 

He called on the force to work together so that the public would have love for and faith in their police.

 

Principally he said that individual policemen and women should develop themselves personally.

 

The should be professional in their work.

 

Be proactive in their service. 

 

For the good of the public.

 

Thai Rath reported Damrongsak's earnest good wishes for all in the force on a day to recognise their "solemn responsibilities and duties". 

 

He thanked his subordinates saying they should be "proud of their sacrifices for the Thai people".

 

Putting the rhetoric aside many in Thailand regard the police with suspicion with some critics viewing them as the country's largest mafia.

Very early for April first, they are not even very active, never mind pro active. Last time we went to the station, wrongly accused of guilty when a bike ran into our car, one cop was asleep the whole time slumped over his desk

Awe, how sweet of him. He obviously has the mind of a three year old if he thinks that being nice will undo decades of cynical corruption. I have yet to meet a Thai person who does not positively hate the RTP.

The people should not love you but respect you. Respect can only be earned by doing your job instead of being corrupt, lazy and making your own laws. Police should not work from 9-17 on a day but 24 hours and help to make the country safe for everybody even for people who disagree with the establishment. If there are non violent protest don't use watercanons, chemicals and guns. That will give you respect and that will help to give a better name than now in Thailand and outside
