Shrimp?

Featured Replies

Dunno which forum this should be in so I'll try here.

Under my house we have a basement built in 2006 . In 2008 ish the rains were pretty bad and the tiles didn't hold the ground waters back resulting in our basement to flood to a height of about 40cm.

So I dug a sump hole on the other side of the basement wall deeper than the floor of the basement but still under the house. Keeping this story short I was able to pipe the water off my property and resolving my flooding basement problem.

This year we've had a lot of rain so inquisitively I poked my head under the house. I could see that my sump was working being as the basement wasn't flooding but there was water in the sump hole. Now this is why I posted my story.

In the water swimming about were shrimp/prawns. We live nowhere near a river or the likes and our grounds are solid. So where did the shrimps/prawns come from? I've tried Google but nothing. Over to yous.

A shrimp farm somewhere in the area and flooding should do the job.

Nice try. No fish or shrimp farming anywhere near. Our house land has a fall to it so the surface land never floods. Just the ground water in my case.

I have heard that duck and other water fowl supposedly carry fish eggs from one water source to another which allows fish to be hatched. Couldn't that occur for shrimp as well?

Sorry no waterfowl around where I live. Even if there were the sump is not accessible to wild life. No dams or ponds within a half a K of our house.

BBQ time! Don't forget the spicy sauce and plenty of beers ????

Let me ask this, are you sure what you are seeing are shrimp? Pics?

How deep is this sump hole you are referring to?

Shrimp/prawn it doesn't matter. They're of that species. My sump is about 1.5 m deep by 80cm diameter and to get a photo would be difficult but I'll try tomorrow. It's gonna be difficult but.........................

Net a few and take a pic of them. Shouldn't be too difficult.

If I manage to do that it still doesn't answer the question where'd they came from.

"Its raining cats and dogs." Same idea!

Having a bad day are we?

Waste of time photographing them as they're basically see through. I tried to catch one but due to the disturbance of the water the bottom turns to mud. I doubt we're gonna get an answer to my question. Will wait for the sediment to settle and I'll try again later.

Why is it a waste of time? I'm merely interested to see if what you have is really shrimp.

How hard is it to net one, take it outside in the direct light, pull out your phone, and take a pic?

The chance of being prawns rather than shrimp is high because most prawns live in fresh water. Whereas shrimp are mostly found in salt water. Obviously the water around here is fresh water. Way up the odds.
