Is Peace Possible
Tom Segev, an Israeli historian, argues: “With the Palestinians, Israel has a conflict which is about the very roots of each side’s national identity. “Hamas was prepared to sacrifice over 50,000 of its people on the dream they could one day displace Israel. “And Israel was prepared to kill those 50,000 in a delusion that Gaza would no longer pose a threat.” Alex Kane: Israel is no more secure today than it was after October 7 The following are excerpts from an interesting article by Alex Kane where he quotes Ori Rabinowitz, an Assistant Professor of International Relations at the Hebrew University of Jerusalem, who questions whether Israel wants to have diplomatic agreements with neighbouring countries or is it on a messianic quest for the Greater Land of Israel. Kane contrasts Israel’s wars with Iran and Hizbullah where the aim was/is to weaken their military capabilities, thus forcing them to accept an arms-control treaty through diplomacy. However in Gaza, he says the prime minister and his ultra-religious allies have been fighting a messianic war beyond any pragmatic function. Israel had been able to reach agreements with Egypt and Jordan because the disputes have been mainly about borders, and prior the Hamas attack, the US was supporting a broader agreement between Israel, Bahrain and the United Arab Emirates – the Abraham Accords. But fact that the accords were not dependent on any resolution of the Israeli-Palestinian conflict, made no mention of Israeli withdrawal, any concessions to the PLO or Palestinian Authority, or to the EU and UN resolutions on the situation made it patent to Hamas that the lack of a deal acceptable to the Palestinians would no longer be a barrier to Arab states building or initiating new relationships with Israel. Hamas must have known that the response to the October 7 attack in 2023 would be swift and brutal. Hamas's attack has been a disaster for Palestinian Gazans. But for Israel it has been a disaster too, Kane argues. Israel could have told the world it was prepared to negotiate. There was a chance for a limited, measured response, followed by a broader political/diplomatic response with support from key Arab nations, the EU and US , rather than cause the large civilian casualties, homes destroyed, the enforced movement of the people, the embargo on food, etc. These are all memories to be passed down the generations, fuelling hatred and revenge. Ironically Israel should know that it is almost impossible to kill off an identity, or race, or ethnicity or belief. -

Vietnam thought it had a deal on its US tariff rate. Then Trump stepped in.
And do you think that he should be slashing budgets, healthcare etc at the same time as taxing US citizens more and more? -

Have You Met Foreigners in Thailand Who Talk Big, But Live Small?
There’s a certain subset of posters whose sole purpose appears to be provocation. They operate under the thinly veiled guise of asking seemingly innocuous questions - carefully crafted to spark controversy - or by making outrageous claims they know will inevitably ignite conflict. It’s not discussion they’re after, but disruption masquerading as curiosity. -
