SHARM EL SHEIKH, Egypt — Dozens of presidents and prime ministers were speaking Monday at a global summit on climate change after the United Nations chief opened the day’s session with a warning that the world was “on a highway to climate hell with our foot on the accelerator.”

The U.N. secretary general, António Guterres, set the tone for the annual United Nations-led international climate talks, which officially began on Sunday as the accumulating threats of war, warming and economic crisis take a toll on every continent, hitting the world’s most vulnerable people the hardest.

“We are in the fight of our lives, and we are losing,” Mr. Guterres said in opening remarks at the summit in the Red Sea resort of Sharm el Sheikh, Egypt.

Last eight years hottest ever on record, U.N. report warns as COP27 gets under way

Earth's warming weather and rising seas are getting worse and doing so faster than before, the World Meteorological Organisation warned as world leaders started gathering in Egypt for international climate negotiations at Cop27.

...

In its annual state of the climate report, the United Nations' weather agency said that sea level rise in the past decade was double what it was in the 1990s and since January 2020 has jumped at an even higher rate.

The past eight years have been the warmest on record, the WMO said.

I wonder if the hypocritical blowhards at COP 27 can beat the record of last year. The Glasgow meeting created an estimated 100,000 tons of CO2. I am sure they can do it if they try.

Don't be sidelined by peripheral stuffs like need to fly in for an important climate change conference. The attention should be focused on the 13 days of the Glasgow conference between nearly 200 countries and signing of the Glasgow Climate Pact and the completion of the Paris Agreement's Rulebook. They are other achievements and goals that were reached  that include accelerating the phase-out of coal, curtailing deforestation, speeding up the switch to EV and encouraging investments in renewables. I am sure trying to prevent a climate catastrophe by securing global net zero by mid-century and maximum of 1.5 C degrees of warming are not important to you.

Errrr, the "world" isn't on anything, as the "world" will be absolutely fine without humans destroying it.

IMO "we" lost it when the world's population passed 3 billion. It's been too late to do anything to change it for decades, as most want the lifestyle that is causing it, and given that the attendees didn't ride a camel all the way to Egypt, everyone at that talk session are IMO hypocrites. I guess the pleasures of a holiday in a lux resort overcame any desire to use video conferencing.

Yeah, I guess they have no alternative but to hang out in an airconditioned beach resort, eh? Now, if ONLY there was some technology or device available to let people meet face to face and communicate without travelling and burning fossil fuels.... well, perhaps some time in the future...

And no, they are not important to me. In Canada we would welcome an extra 1.5 degrees- maybe we could grow our own citrus fruit!

I just don't believe that anything we can do now will make an iota of difference, so IMO it's all just hot air adding to global warming.

Given they can't even stop the increasing destruction of the rain forest in Brazil or the Congo, they are just a waste of space, IMO.

EVs, LOL. They are burning coal to make electricity to power those things.

Thank you for your informed scientific opinion.

Zoom not practical for large groups like this where there will be lots of informal contact made.

Just being a truth teller.

Can you please share with the world your teleportation technology so air travel will no longer be the way to convey human beings long distances in a short time?

Yes, it is called Zoom. Or possibly TED.   There is no need for the champagne socialists to schmooze like this, especially if they are truly worried about the climate.

But I am sure they are all using paper straws, so all is forgiven.

Zoom can handle up to 1000 people. How big are the gatherings at COP?

30,000 people will be in attendance. Is there a Meta version of COP 27?

Great. If they are merely watching the proceedings they could easily do that from their homes on live cameras placed at the venue. Again, no need to attend in person and burn fossil fuel.  Something tells me that the actual  discussions wont be over 1000 people each. Zoomable

Something tells me that lots gets done and connections are made via informal and chance meetings. And by the way, the COP 26 meeting was held in glamorous Glasgow.

Yeah sure. I have heard about the "informal contact" that goes on in such situations! 55555555555

If it can't be done for such a large group they should change the format so it can be done. They are looking like a bunch of hypocrites and IMO they'll achieve sod all, despite the vast amount of hot air being generated.

I suppose you are happy that they get to enjoy a holiday in a lux resort at taxpayer expense, but those taxpayers struggling to feed their family will not be so accepting of government extravaganzas.

Anyway, if it has to be a face to face meeting, why not Blackpool? They could enjoy the roller coaster or go for a tram ride in between meetings.

Glasgow seems like a cool place to visit.
