When did farang start to mean a white person

Just wondering when farang became a white western person.

 

My interpretation from everyone Thai and non Thai was that it was a foreigner meaning that it was multi cultural and multi colored.

 

Recently in a chat on here I used the term and got called a racist because I used the term and they felt I was only saying that white people smoked pot and got drunk.

 

Looking up online the definition for farang is foreigner which to me includes all races and people from all non Thai countries.

'imfamous' is part  the meaning for some.

 

But not all, I'm well aware that many Thai folks use the term with zero negative conitation.

Just like ‘chao ang moh’ is more derogatory version of ‘ang moh’ in Singapore. Literally “smelly red haired one” — but it always depends how it is said too.

Don’t forget Mat Salleh in Malaysia and Kano in the Philippines. Both have historical connotations.

On a bit of a tangent but it always surprises me how few Westerners realise that the famous ‘Massaman (or Matsaman) Curry’ in Thailand simply translates as ‘Muslim Curry’?

The difference is, in Asia there is no PC culture… no shame to call it like they see it.

I have seen instances of Farang husbands trying to point out to their Thai Mia Farangs (Foreigner’s Wives) that they are actually the Farangs now in their husband’s home country!

Heya newbie! When people object to other people mistreating them or a 3rd set of people because of the colour of their skin, that isn't "woke nonsense", that is decent behaviour.   If you welcome racism, perhaps you are lucky enough not to have suffered from it.

my wife moved to canada with me for over 10 years. i think maybe 2 or 3 times she spoke to me about this happening.

When I'm in a group of Thais and hear the word, "Farang", I know exactly who they are talking about, and at the point I tend to focus in on the conversation.  It's fun catching them saying something derogatory (it doesn't happy often but it does happen) and then saying something that lets them know I heard and understood them, usually with me grinning and making direct eye-contact.  Major loss of face.  But most of the time it's a simply descriptor that identifies one person out of a crowd, or a specific somebody who lives in a Tambon that is rather free of Westerners.

Other than that though, I don't care.  I live in an area where I'm one out of another two 'farangs' in our Tambon, and I don't know either of them personally.  Just the way I like it.

As the French were the first foreigners here in Thailand and presented to the king ,which was King Narai the Great 1632-1656, probably  goes back to then ,or soon afterwards.

Pre Covid their was  the Lopburi ,Pan-Narai festival, where this meeting between the King of Thailand Pra-Narai, and a French Noble man is acted out ,complete with a couple of elephants and Thai dancers.
