Joining a small convoy of vehicles to donate some of the basic necessities of life to community members in need has shown us how the spirit of giving is alive and well in the expat community of Cha-Am.

This is not a big mission by a registered charity but a bunch of local expats quietly responding to these needs as best they can.  They have a ‘keep it simple’ approach without looking for recognition and with little fanfare.  There’s no name for the group, fancy logos or committee meetings, just the genuine desire to help out as they are able.

Money is raised when tickets are sold from a weekly prize draw of items donated by local small businesses.  These prizes may be vouchers for a restaurant meal, a facial or massage, a few drinks or a pizza from a bar or other donated items.  There are no expenses to deduct from the raffle money, so next is a shopping trip to spend all the takings on rice, bottled water with individual food parcels made up ready for delivery.

Apart from the volunteer expats, an important person in the process is Khun Ta, a local Thai school teacher.  She liaises with the Cha-Am Municipality (Tessaban) to identify community members in need and has a vital role in making sure those identified will be at the drop-off location or to ensure those too ill to attend won’t miss out.  There are also Thai volunteer community health workers on hand when the donations are delivered to avoid any confusion or uncertainty.

To summarise the day’s mission; this was a message from one of the organisers:

“Today we delivered 60 food parcels to two locations in Cha Am.  This is a typical example of how the money we raise through the prize draw is put to good use.

The Tessaban identify the families in need and we go along to distribute the parcels that were put together the previous day.

Thanks to all the prize donors and everyone who buys tickets.  All the money raised goes towards the good causes.  Sixty-three food parcels cost approximately 14,000 baht.  Many thanks to everyone involved.’’

There’s a very simple philosophy behind this charity effort with no aims to become bigger or more grand.  “We’ll just keep it going for as long as we have donations of items to be raffled.  We see it on the faces of these people in need that it makes a big difference to them.”

The raffle and prize draw has taken place each Friday for the past ten months at The Lounge Sports Bar at 7.30 pm with donations always welcome.

Great news. Good on these good folks for getting involved. There are alot of people in need here. Far worse since the highly selective covid shutdowns and the Prayuth decimation of tourism. Likely millions unemployed here.

Totally agree.. hats off to these people and the teacher for getting what's needed to those who need it the most.
