Mask wearing in Japan has been applied intelligently in the past.

There is a strong degree of social responsibility. IF someone is unwell and suffering some mild cold symptoms etc... they wear a mask to protect others - I like this idea.

This is a facet of mask wearing I’d like to see adopted everywhere else.

I don’t think blindly wearing a mask is a good thing.

From the sole perspective of transmission of viruses and public health, mask wearing throughout all of society may have its advantageous, but there are many things we could do which would be advantageous to society on a whole..

We could ban alcohol...  reduce ALL speed limits to 30mph... Ban Sugar... Limit Television... etc etc... all extreme measures of course and somewhat ridiculous to consider... but a line is drawn somewhere.... and placing a ‘filter’ over our faces as a just incase measure when we are no longer in a pandemic situation may also seem extreme to many / some.

"intelligently"? I completely disagree.

Japan is a very inhumane country. Vending machines everywhere. Robots in many places. The described mask wearing. Digital girlfriends/waifus. One of the lowest birth rates in the world. You can literally rent friends for money because social interaction there is so messed up. The pornos there are absolutely disgusting and weird, completely bizarre and extreme, a psychological expression for their suppressed emotions.

In fact, in Japan there is a hidden culture admiring suicide, because the whole country has suppressed expression of emotion. A bit like in Thailand, just in Thailand it never really ends in suicide but more often in mass shootings, domestic violence, alcohol abuse and so on.

Yes, it is very sad that the resistance in Thailand is so small. Indeed. And now? And why it does not apply to me?

Are you born and bred of Thai nationality?

Yes! We live on a small island and mask-wearing here was just existing for 2-3 months. During this time sometimes we were the only ones without a mask, but never cared.

But since most people stopped wearing one, you can see exactly the effect being described by you.

The last people wearing masks took them off because suddenly THEY were the ones being weirdly looked at.

Nevertheless, all the people who do not wear a mask on this island wear them as soon as they go onto the mainland.

It NEVER was about health. It ALWAYS was about conformity.

Go on believing your view of conformity....lol

you gotta love the "other country" arguments when they spout them. LOL
The whole "Asian people always wore masks prior to CBS"
very few would wear for pollution, very few and motobike taxi's
i was in Japan in 2019, and do not recall seeing a single person in a mask, not even in Tokyo

Then why do you bother living in such a non hospitable country where your views are superior to those of the country you stay in as a long term tourist....unless you have a permanent residence card you are only here on an extension of stay or a long term visa which at anytime they can decide is null and void. It does not matter if your married to a Thai or not and doesnt matter if  you own a condo or the house which sits on your wife's land.  Time to move along as all your doing is showing true ignorance regarding the way of life and why things are done differently in country's which you are not born of.

Not that I really care about this tangent, but my first visit to Tokyo was in 2007, and one thing I did notice, was all the mask wearing.

So much that I actually asked one of the locals, what was with the masks, and he told me, that there were different reasons, but one of them was if you were sick, you wore it to protect others from getting your infection.

i used to think the same when i moved to BKK many years ago
standing on BTS seeing a good few people wearing masks
but fact is we just pay attention to those that stand out
just as others have done when you have not worn a mask and the majority are
but in reality these pre CBS mask wearers were very few
we just dont pay as much attention to those not standing out
but a handful passing by would spark your attention and curiosity

i just find it hilarious when people use these arguments
and it's always other countries

I think there is little doubt as to the effectiveness of everyone wearing masks in public….
… but, as you pointed out, with bars, restaurants, gyms, sports-halls etc all open there is sufficient non-mask wearing going on to make mask wearing relatively ineffective….

The community benefit of Mask wearing relies on a ‘critical mass’ of wearers above which mask wearing provides a benefit & below which makes little difference.

With everything being open, I suspect we are ‘below’ that ‘critical mass’ & intermittent mask wearing in some places but not others is simply ineffective.

For mask wearing to be effective it must be on an ‘all the time everywhere’ basis & this isn’t practical when the symptoms are no longer as serious as we originally thought at the beginning of the pandemic.

Even at 'critical mass' , real world experience would suggest it doesn't really prevent Omicron transmission at a community level.

Japan has 'all the time everywhere' basis in theory, except in reality, it doesn't- because people take them off to eat in Izakaya's etc , and often in offices etc too. Also being airborne the cloth/surgical masks commonly worn just don't stop Omicron enough, it is too infectious.

'All the time everywhere' mask wearing is actually impossible, which is why Japan still got almost 1,000,000 cases last week.

Yep... given the extent of transmission, I’m inclined to agree.

I think more people are wearing Masks in Thailand right now than in Japan.

We have friends there - photos (Facebook etc) show many people not wearing masks... it looks about 50/50 when out in the streets...

Agreed...  I think when something is so contagious, just like common cold, its pretty much impossible to prevent without extreme measures.

Why not wear Hazmat...

Because no medical authorities are recommending that, unlike masks.

OR because a Hazmat suit is completely impractical...   Medical authorities would see us continuing to isolate, but that is not practical....   Masks are not so effective, but thats about as much advice as they can give because it's not so impractical - but is mask wearing really that effective in the current ’social climate’ where everything is open ?

We're discussing mask wearing and you are going on about robots and porno ?????

When unwell with a cold, the Japanese wear a mask to protect others...  thats widely known. Regardless of all other issues, this facet of society is one the rest of us would do well to immediate.

If we have a cold, we should wear a mask when out in public - its not a difficult concept.

I think the vast majority of people agree...

BUT... there is also a discussion to be had, is there any point wearing a mask any more?

Is mask wearing effective at all ? or are people wearing masks because everyone else is?

I don’t think people want to be expected to wear masks in public in 5 years from now unless its proven as being absolutely necessary....  So, where is the line, at which point do we stop wearing masks in Public ?...

OR.. will Thailands population still be wearing a mask in 5 years when other countries are not, simply because no one in society wants to be the one to stand out from the crowd by not wearing a mask ?

The topic is not about whether mask wearing is a good idea or not.

I think if you go to a place where they ask you to wear one, then put them on.

On the BTS I still wear one (but it's not mandatory anymore... it's only recommended).

Outside I wear a mask, when I have a cold, or when the dust is very bad again (which unfortunately happens from time to time ???? )

I think on most areas it should be up to the person if he wants to wear a mask or not. It's wrong to argue he has to wear a mask or as well the opposite... If someone want to wear them, then let them.
It's always the same.. the extremist make life complicated (I don't talk about masks.. this is a general problem)

There is only one "I am so superior" person in this story and it is not the security guard.

Thanks for pointing it out. I know, I am certainly superior to all these obeying sheeps and even more certainly to any useless government employee worldwide.

While the security guard is working a normal 9-5 job and had this attitude that he would be more important than for example a farmer that brings some nice food on everyone's plate.

Yup, because there is a connection.

Japan is an inhumane and unnatural society, most likely the worst in the world (together with China).

Robots, their weird porns and the low birth rate are as well symptoms of this broken society as the delusional mask-wearing.

Completely detached from nature.

Because I like the nature, the territorial taxation system and that (beside with the mask-wearing) usually no one bothers me. The safety of the country for my children and that there is no risk of a war at the moment in Thailand, be it an escalation of China/USA or NATO/Russia.

I do not get your logic. If you live in a country other than your home country, you should not criticize what you do not like? You should not open your mouth and say your opinion?
That might be your way, but it is de facto a suppression of yourself. Men are feeling that in a decline of their male hormones and their general integrity. You can continue doing it, as most other expats are doing it here. I see so many low-T-males here.

But I will not do it.

You might argue that they throw me out of the country if I open my mouth. This might be even true. But just because they can rely on enough cucks like you that will stay here anyway without saying what they truly think because they are scared. Fear is ruling you.

If everyone would be like me, they would need to decide between taking the foreign money or being in a condition as Laos or Myanmar. They would give us more rights before chasing away the cash-cow, but sadly people like you prevent this scenario. But this will not prevent me from publicly sharing my opinion, no matter in which country I am. I am not scared of anything.
