EV Charging Stations (CS)

Featured Replies

About a week ago I registered with the MEA EV charging app in a moment of weakness.   MEA is the electric company for the Bangkok area and has also been slowly building-up its EV charging network.  It has a little less than 100 locations around the greater Bangkok area right now with about 40 of those locations being at post offices and MEA offices....the rest at fuel stations, 7-11s, malls, schools, etc.   The app will not show any charger locations or any info until you "register" on the app.

Now MEA does not have any chargers outside of the greater Bangkok area.   So, while it's useful to people who live/work/drive in the Bangkok area, it's probably wouldn't be of much use to anyone else unless maybe you visit Bangkok frequently and would like to have another charging network option.   The only reason I finally decided to register was for those cases where the charging network has promotions/cheap charging....other than in those cases I'll rarely use the MEA network.

Registration was super easy....they only use a Wallet approach for payment and there is only one way to top-up the wallet and that's by PromptPay.  No option yet to use any other form of top-up payment or direct payment like using a debit/credit card....it's either fund the app's wallet via PromptPay or you can't use the app to charge.

But you can top-up the wallet with as little as Bt1 (one baht)....this is good as a person doesn't have to add a much larger amount (like maybe several hundred baht) just so they can do a real world test especially when the person knows he will rarely use the charging network.    As a wallet top-up test I did my initial top-up with only Bt1...no problem.  Then I topped-up another Bt29 to get my wallet up to a massive Bt30 total as I planned to do a brief real world test at the nearest MEA DC charger the next time I needed to do a groceries run.

On the MEA app charger map it showed three chargers less than 5km from me with the nearest one less than 2km away.  But the charger only 2Km away was always showing an "unavailable" status (I had checked its status several times over several days....always an "unavailable" status....and no picture of the charger on the app...the charger was at a 7-11).  The other two chargers always showed available/in-use when I checked their status.

And regarding the app's charging location map, you cannot zoom-out to see "all" the charging locations at once...even when zoomed-out to see much more than the Bangkok region.  Instead you need to zoom-in on the Bangkok region to start seeing some of the locations and once a popup saying "Search this area" appears you need to click that pop-up and "then" it will all show chargers for the "part" of Bangkok you want to look at.  If you want to see if chargers exist in another area of the Bangkok region you need to move the map to show that area and click the "Search this area" again for it to show charger locations.  The charger map just operates differently from all the other apps I'm registered with.

Anyway, a few days later off I go to do a real world charging test..  I first drive by the "unavailable" charger and when seeing it I understood why it was always showing an "unavailable" status in the app.  It was due to the charger being brand new 180KW charger than hadn't went operation yet....it was installed but still wrapped in plastic...I expect it should go operational soon.  Another example of new chargers popping -up all the time.   See snapshot below.

I then continue on to the next nearest charger just a few kilometers away....it looked pretty similar to the one below but was a 120KW charger.  The charging process started no problem and since I only had Bt30 in the wallet the charging process automatically stopped at Bt28.4....leaving me with Bt1.6 in the wallet.  Successful test.

So, the MEA charging app is simple to register with and use, only uses the Wallet payment method, PromptPay is the only option to top-up the wallet, you can top-up with as little as Bt1 (one), and the network at this time has a little less than 100 charging locations only in the greater Bangkok region.

A new MEA 180KW charger at a 7-11 only a few road kilometer from my western

Bangkok home.  Installed, hasn't went operational yet, still covered in plastic,

but shows on the MEA charging app map....shows as unavailable right now since it

has not went operational.

Although the app has "Choose Amount" icons starting at Bt100,
there is a note code saying you can top-up with as little as one baht.

Good for those cases where you want to put less than Bt100 in

the wallet.

If you ever run across a "Ginka" charging station this video with English audio and English Closed Captions (or you can set to Thai audio) explains how to use it....and also how you can have a Ginka charging station installed for profit.  No app is required to use Ginka.   See below video and their website for more info.

How to Use

Ginka charger locations can be found at their website.  Below is a zoomed-out snapshot of all Thailand; zooming-in on their website provides detailed locations/info.  Mostly 7/22KW AC chargers, but I did see some DC 40KW chargers when lookout at some locations.

It was only in mid Oct 2025 when Spark announced it had reached 100 charging locations/stations and had that Bt100 promotion talked earlier in this thread.   When looking at the Spark Facebook since that time they been announcing new location openings left and right.

This morning I did a count of locations on the app and came up with 116 locations.  I thought to myself I did a count around 1 Nov and got a 106 count.  But with the count this morning/13 Nov I got 116....counted  twice and got 116 each time.  I then sent a message to Spark on their LINE account asking how many location they now have....the responded within a few minutes saying 116.  And these are DC charger locations.

Boy, they are growing fast.  And there are two Spark locations less than 2km from my home that have been installed for a few months at Bangchak stations, but haven't went operational yet nor appear in the app since they haven't went operational.  I expect Spark has more locations like this just waiting to go operational any day now...appear on their app.   Yeap, Spark sure is growing fast right now.

I think since most of the charging networks charge in the 6 to 9 baht per KWH ballpark with around 7.5 to 8 baht per KWH being the infield I'm not sure a price war where a network might lower its price from say Bt7.5 to Bt7.0 or even to Bt6.0 would excite too many customers.

Heck, with the marginal cost of charging at home using the PEA/MEA grid the cost is approx Bt5 per KWH.  I'm surprised DC charging is as cheap as it already is in Thailand.  Sometimes I wonder just how much each charging station makes/profits per month.   DC chargers are not cheap to buy and install....I would think the payback time would be years at most locations.

I think brief promotions like the one Spark just had, free charging on a weekend at selected chargers, etc., will be a key way the companies try to lure people into using their charging network frequently compared to another network.  And charger location and ease of use (and payment) will also be big factors...quite possibly the biggest factors as long as the price per KWH is not too high.

How many commercial EV charger "locations", repeat locations are in Thailand as of 31 Oct 2025 compared to 22 Sep 2021?   Well, it's 4,048 and 693, respectively....almost a 6 fold increase in locations over 4 years.     And that's only the locations reported by members of the Electric Vehicle Association of Thailand (EVAT).

Below are some charts from EVAT that collects EV charger info from its membership.  By membership I mean those charging network companies that provide data to EVAT.  All charging network are "not" EVAT members so you will not see charger data from non-members companies like Spark EV for example which has 116 locations (all DC chargers with multiple chargers at many locations), OneCharge, Tesla Supercharger, etc.,  and also numerous smaller charging networks that focus on AC and low power (under 50KW) DC chargers at hotels/resorts, restaurants, drink shops, sports fields, and just a wide variety of small businesses.    I expect the number of current locations is actually closer to 4,500 when including those smaller (and growing) charging networks not reflected in the charts.

See below Sep 2021 and Oct 2025 EVAT charts for more details that include number of locations, chargers and connectors.

For those of you who may not know, the great majority of Spark EV 116 locations now appear on the ReverSharger charging app.   I say great majority because when comparing the Spark locations shown on the ReverSharger app and Spark app I found a couple locations that showed on the Spark app but not on the ReverSharger app....but it was only a few.   And maybe it was just me that couldn't find a few of the locations as the Spark announcements below says "all" Spark chargers are now available on the ReverSharger app.

It was only about a week ago I noticed that Spark locations are now shown on the ReverSharger app, but that's only because I haven't used the ReverSharger app for many months.   Actually Spark chargers have been showing on the ReverSharger app since md June according to the announcements (which I missed also)....see below announcements I googled-up..

And a person can actually charge at Spark charger by using the ReverSharger app.   It's not one of those cases where some charging network apps might show locations of other charging networks "BUT" you cannot actually do a charging session; instead, you must use that chargers specific app.

Yesterday I did a test.  I went to a Spark charger location....first did a charger using the ReverSharger app and then did another charge using the Spark app.   Now when using the ReverSharger app you will not be able to use whatever payment methods you have setup in the Spark app; you will only be able to use whatever payment methods you have setup in the ReverSharger app.

ReverSharger app when zoomed way out to show all of Thailand.

The "white with red lightning bolt circles" are Spark locations/chargers.

When you zoom-in you will see a lot more Spark locations as many are fully

or partially hidden under other circles when zoomed way out.

Mid June 2025 announcements of Spark chargers now also

Another week of cheap rate charging for all Spark EV chargers.

Dec 10th thru Dec 16th the rate will be reduced to 5.93 baht/kw any time day or night !!

Cheap DC  Fast charging...not much more than charging off the PEA/MEA grid at regular rates (i.e., non-TOU rates) where a person pays approx Bt5 per KWH when including all costs of basic rate+Ft+VAT+meter fee.

I have just driven north to south in my ICE car. At every stop I observed  the Ecar charging points that had a car charging. LFP batteries don't mind being charged up to 100%.   Older chemistry prefer 80%, I think.

We usually stop at 90-95%, unless not done doing whatever, but rarely there long enough to get to 100%, unless I'm on the internet.

Only because 95-100% goes in quite slow, and we're usually done doing what ever, and the car is usually 90+ % by that time, so no need to stay longer, as next leg is usually short.   The purpose to stop wasn't the need to charge anyway, usually, but since there .... why not.

As stated above for LFP batteries, for NMC battery chemistry the below applies:

Charging NMC (Nickel Manganese Cobalt) batteries to 100% is generally discouraged for daily use as it stresses the battery and accelerates degradation, with 80-90% being ideal for longevity; only charge to 100% for long trips when needed, and avoid leaving it fully charged for extended periods to protect battery.

Most of the EV charging guidance found on the internet is based on NMC/NCA type lithion-ion EV batteries which were the first type and still most common lithion-ion EV batteries.  General charging guidance is keep the charge level between 10-80%...and only charge to 100% when needing maximum range for a trip to extend the battery's life.  NMC/NCA don't really like be charged to 100% "frequently."

However, over the past 3-5 years LFP type lithion ion EV batteries are increasing seen in EVs because they are cheaper to make than MNC/NCA batteries, safer, and have a longer life.

LFP batteries are rapidly taking market share from NMC/NCA batteries.  You can regularly charge LFP batteries to 100% without significant issue...in fact, it's recommended to charge EV LFP batteries to 100% once a week or month by vehicle manufacturers such as BYD, Tesla, etc., to recalibrate the LFP battery management system which is also good for the LFP battery.

So, where you saw a lot of people charging their EV to 100% its probably because their  EVs have LFP vs NMC/NCA batteries.  Different battery chemistries, different care and feeding procedures, etc.

I also did another count of total chargers as of today/17 Dec and it's 138 charger locations...all DC Fast Chargers.  14 more charger locations since my 24 Nov 2025 count.  Spark is growing fast.

And I just finished doing a test for 30 baht worth of electrons on that new Spark charger close to my home...worked fine.

Another update: This evening I went into the Spark app to check the receipt on that 30 baht test I did the other day at the brand new charging location within 2km of my home.  When doing this I noticed on the map there was another new charger showing less than 2km away from me....at a Bangchak station I drive by at least 5 times a week.  When the wife and I did a groceries run this evening I swung into the Bangchak station to see if the charger really existed...and sure enough it did.  Another Spark fast charger that just went operational.

After getting back home I did another count of Spark stations and it's now 145 (and I counted twice)....an increase of 7 Spark locations in just one day....the other day they only had 138 (and I counted twice).   So, in just one day 7 more Spark charger locations have come online.   I guess it's some kind of end of year push.  And there is one Spark charger at a KFC really close to me which hasn't went operational yet but I expect it will go operational soon.

Help....I'm being over run by Spark chargers!!!!

And since most (not all) Spark chargers are listed in/useable with the ReverSharger app I checked to see if those two stations close to my home that opened over the last two days are also now showing in the ReverSharger app---and they were "not."   Maybe they never will....or maybe it just takes a while.

Yep !, Spark has become my favourite charger, mainly due the forward thinking that the company is showing but the higher speed of 180kw ( my Seal can accept 150 kw ) DC charging helps also.

Setting off on a little road trip tomorrow and a quick look at the app has designated a charging location in Thoen as first port of call. Last time we ventured north we stopped at Bangchak pump on Jan 3rd getting the last day of the free Rever charging , the Spark charger is no doubt in the same pump.

Also noticed a Spark charger near my home ( 12km ) which wasn’t there until a few days ago when i noticed an ad on Facebook.

Obviously chargers near home aren’t that important but handy if having a promotional event.

See full article at weblink below.   PTT EV Station PluZ  charging network planning to expand from current 2500 DC charging points/connectors to 7000 by 2030.

https://www.autoinfo.co.th/online/570169

“EV Station PluZ” emphasizes its “Easy, Every Charge…Go” service.

24 Dec 2025

Currently, EV Station PluZ has expanded its network to cover over 1,200 locations across Thailand (data as of December 2025), including PTT Station service stations, LPG Auto Stations, and NGV Stations, as well as areas outside service stations such as office buildings, shopping malls, hospitals, hotels, restaurants, and resorts. The average distance between charging stations is no more than 100 km, covering every province, ensuring users can travel reliably over long distances, during long holidays, or in crowded travel seasons. The goal is to expand the number of DC charging points to 7,000 nationwide by 2030, from the current more than 2,500 DC charging points available in service stations and other potential areas, to meet the increasing demand across the country.

So, just doing a little Spark charging here in CM and had the pleasure of finding the 4 chargers empty ( although that changed shortly as 3 others appeared ).

IMG_8068.jpeg.f0b02c1eaa38492a97cc30c9d66faba3.jpeg

This is a new format for me as i have only seen chargers with 2 leads before but these appear individual.

So, initially i was getting 119.9 kw while the app showed 121.0 kw ( which appeared to be a small loss ) so i thought it must be a bank of 4 x 120 kw chargers and was disappointed to see that when another car arrived my charging rate dropped to 58 kw.

My own fault, i had chosen this location as it appears to have 4 chargers whereas it has 2 x 120 kw chargers, ( the cables just housed in fancy receptacles ) so if i had gone to one of the other nearby Spark locations i would be sharing a 180 kw charger !

If i had taken the time to look more closely at the app i would have seen the 2 main panels inbetween the chargers and the charging output of 240 kw !

IMG_8069.jpeg.3d013359f176676445d6c06d52deffa2.jpeg

Live and learn i guess, without paying too much attention i had initially thought it was 4 x 180 kw, then when i started charging i thought it was 4 x 120 kw and came to the ultimate conclusion it was no better than PTT chargers !!

Oh well, next year i will improve i promise 😞

I ran across a similar Spark charging station in Pattaya several months ago....looked pretty much the same as the one you described in Chiang Mai except with 360KW max chargers....and it had 4 of those fancy cable receptacles/stands.   If I remember right a person scanned a QR code on the fancy cable receptacles/stand vs the charger itself.    Took me a minute to figure that out as I started off looking for a QR code to scan on the charger itself.

And I expect the max charging rate of two of the stands was 360KW and probably the other two lessor at 180KW.     Yea, this Spark setup which is uses chargers made by Aion is different from Spark's normal chargers.    Merry Christmas.

image.png.e5af6a7dc05718a2e8cd39a91e9439df.png

Stopped at another Spark for a little top up/toilet stop, only wish the facilities were better at the Bangchak pumps.

This pump has a ReverSharger ( which I used on the last day of the free charging promotion ) now 2 x 120 kw Spark chargers next to it in another new, to me, format .

IMG_8095.jpeg.a9298d6b9a7ae550c037f0923275c764.jpeg

All were free when I arrived but shortly after a couple of cars arrived and chose the ReverSharger.

The Spark chargers seem like they are not very familiar round these parts as a Zeekr 9 couldn’t figure it out and drove off and another big van like thing ( just had a little google, Denza D9 ) checked out the waiting time for the ReverSharger before deciding on one of the 3 vacant Spark spots.

Strange as i think prices are the same and both 120 kw ?

1 hour ago, Andrew Dwyer said:

Yeap, at this location the ReverSharger is Bt8.0/KWH and the Spark Bt7.9KW/KWH.   I expect a lot of people still haven't heard about Spark.

I just come back from a groceries run to a Tops Market on the ground floor of Central Pinklao here in western Bangkok.  Guess people are already on holiday as there was very little open parking space....just jammed with people driving around and around looking for a parking spot.

HOWEVER, there was a row of 12 AC chargers (3 Evolt and 9 Onion) on that ground floor parking....about half of the chargers in use....I pulled into an open Evolt charger slot and began charging.  The wife and I then took about 20 steps to enter the mall to do our shopping....31 minutes later we came out...paid Bt32 for the charging session and left.    Avoided the parking hassle and got some electrons at the same time.

Yeap, some of the charging networks I have registered with I knew I would rarely use them for DC charging on road trips but could make occasional good use of some of their AC slow chargers in traffic jungles such as Bangkok where parking can often be very hard to find especially on weekends and holidays.

Bjorn seems to be a fan of Spark chargers, on the following video he stops at a Spark charger near Nakhon Sawan and then the same Spark charger I used at Thoen ( Lampang ) yesterday and seems suitably impressed.

Note: he doesn’t try the ReverSharger ( or Reverse Charger as he calls it ! ) as he couldn’t register for the app due to some payment issues.

Anyway here he is picking up the MG IM6 RWD 75kw from Bangkok to drive to his ( Thai ) home in northern chiang mai province.

This is the second review i have watched on the IM6 recently, the other being EVM ( Electric Vehicle Man ) and they both came to the same conclusions.

It is a big heavy car and in Norway the AWD struggled with the range, in the U.K. a slightly similar story but they also question the 750 horsepower for a family SUV ( is it an SUV ? ). But the good news is that the range is suited for warmer climates and here in Thailand the range is much better ( albeit on the RWD version ).

I can’t help being distracted when watching both these YouTubers as Bjorn often travels a route I travel frequently and EVM often travels in or around my hometown in the U.K.. Find myself trying to spot familiar landmarks during both their videos …….. yes, I am really this dull !!

Happy New Year...Welcome to 2026.

On 18 Dec 2025 there were 145 Spark charger locations as I posted above. Did a count (counted twice) on this New Year's morning and there is now 164 Spark charging locations. Spark charger locations are spouting fast like weeds.
