Visa border run to Myanmar via Mae Sai Officially Open

Featured Replies

There’s a lot of misinformation being posted. A rumor happens when nobody has actually tried something. They read something and then they repeat it not knowing if it’s true. People are saying farangs are not being allowed to enter Myanmar at Mae Sai. Someone please show me evidence. Don’t say what someone else told you. And if you make a statement back it up. Don’t just say something. Here’s what I have and it’s very recent Dec8  https://www.asiahighlights.com/southeast-asia/coronavirus-travel-tips

So is this just you thinking it's open?or are you saying it's definitely open for border runs?

Good point.

The article is a general trip advice for US tourist.

Not the slightest detail about specific routes, checkpoints, land border etc.

Interesting. As your source correctly shows, an on-arrival Covid test is required for entry to Myanmar. I had no idea the border at Mai Sai was set up for such tests. More important, it is disgraceful that the Myanmar official visa site (https://evisa.moip.gov.mm/Home/NoticeToTourist?httproute=True) has this misinformation:

Quote

Note: With a view to preventing importation and spread of COVID-19, the Government of the Republic of the Union of Myanmar has temporarily suspended entry of any foreign nationals through any border check point being opened between Myanmar and its neighboring countries. The entry and exit of local population on both sides of the border through the existing check points concerned will not be restricted. They will be subject to health check and temperature screening at the entry of the border check points. Any foreign national with valid entry visa may enter and exit to/from Myanmar only at Yangon International Airport and Mandalay International Airport in accordance with the existing rules and regulations.

It has deterred visa run companies who previously ran trips to the Myanmar border from restarting those services. Perhaps, you should contact the Myanmar authorities and chastise them for their misleading warnings.

Pretty strange. I went to your link and saw the notice in red but then in the faq It says Mae Sainis open. Also date says from Sept 2022. The document I posted is not from the official Myanmar Evisa page but nevertheless it is saying fully open and it’s from Dec8. Not very clear these guys. Here’s from the evisa site faq

With eVisa, you can enter at any one of the following:
1. One of the 3 International Airports: Yangon, Mandalay, Nay Pyi Taw

2. One of the 5 International Land Border Checkpoints: Tachileik, Myawaddy, Kawthaung ,Tamu,Rih khaw dar

To exit from Myanmar, you can use any one of above stated International Airports , International Land Border Checkpoints and furthermore, the Htikee Land Border Checkpoint as well.

The FAQ is outdated. Try applying for the e-visa, and see if you can specify Tachileik as your point of entry.

I booked two weeks ago to fly to Yangon in March 2023 so too early to apply for e-visa yet. The Myanmar website clearly stated that only foreigners flying in/out of Yangon/Mandalay/Nae Pyi Taw was permitted. Land borders only for locals neighbouring the border. Until there is a first hand report on here from a member then assume it is still not possible. Things can and do change fast (I was not aware that foreigners were even permitted to enter Myanmar until recently). For Americans and Canadians then do refer to your governments' travel advice banning all travel to Myanmar. Hopefully land borders will be open again soon (if not already).

USA: Do not travel:

Canada: Avoid all travel:

UK: FCDO advises against all but essential travel to Myanmar, except for the Yangon region.
