Naew Na Thai  Cap: Just about rotten!

Naew Na reported on a sad case in the south of Thailand.

Rescue services at Sawang Ao Tong in Trang requested help from Poh Teck Tung in Nakhon Sri Thammarat.

A man called Dechanarong, 30, a person with mental health issues, had constricted his fingers and arm with metal rings.

The bits were parts of a motorcycle.

Lube failed and after a one hour cutting operation using various tools to remove an armlet the patient was deemed too seriously hurt to continue.

He was taken to Wang Wiset Hospital where ultimately all the rings were removed in a six hour operation.

They weighed about 2 kilograms.

The flesh was very seriously damaged and decomposing.

Relatives said that Dechanarong had had mental health issues for a long time.

They had tried to stop him constricting himself in this way to no avail.

Why didn't his relatives ask for help before it got to the self harm stage?

Perhaps because the Thai mental health hospitals aren't very responsive?

A couple of years ago a family member was threatening to commit suicide by jumping from a structure into a lake.

He had been receiving treatment as an outpatient at a government hospital.

The hospital were called and their reply was "Up to you to bring him in".

So sad but normal in this culture..

But decided not to interfere in a timely manner?
