37 people die, 351 injured on first day of 7-day New Year travel period

Thirty-seven people were killed and 351 others injured in 349 road accidents in Thailand on Thursday, the first of the seven-day New Year holiday period, according to the Department of Public Disaster Prevention and Mitigation.

 

41.55% of the accidents were caused by speeding and 23.50%involved drunk driving. 81.51% of the accidents involved motorcycles. 83.09% of the accidents occurred on straight roads, 43.27% on highways and 28.37% on local roads.

 

Most accidents occurred between 6pm and 7pm. Most of the fatalities were aged between 30 and 39.

Last year2022... 333 fatalities and 2,707 injuries, let's see if anyone learned the lessons of years past... I personally wish to many people pass this holiday safe and sound..

No surprise. Can not drive, use phone while driving, drunk because they dont have any responsibility and speeding because they think they have to be the top man/woman and show the world that they can drive a car. Can anyone explain to me why people start to speed up when you take over?

1/4 drunk driving that is extremely high.  And, over 80% on motorbikes which seems to be about what Thailand averages.

I think I will try and stay off the mb for the next several days.

days of lies started again... Never real numbers, as the daytoll of deaths is normally higher.. Provinces don't report and to look good some report even less than real.. Sadly for all the losses of lives which are most of the time unnecessary...But look on the roads.. Truck slow driving on the middle lane, other cars speeding left and right using 3 lanes for what???  motorcycles driving the wrong way without helmets.. Cars parked where it is not allowed on the highways...And everybody has a business because the telephone is used constantly and are afraid to miss every fly that flies by..Happily a lot of U-turns are  closed otherwise even more problems..

People driving or riding on the wrong side of the road, enter the road from side roads without looking, overtaking in the face of oncoming traffic, behaviour at right turns/U turns, speeding etc, etc, etc. Oh! and mostly DUI.

Death toll in road accidents during the first two days of the 7-day New Year holiday period increased from 37 on Thursday to 85 yesterday (Friday) and the number of injured reached 714.

An odd decision as these figures are absolutely normal with the exception of deaths which is about two-thirds of normal. Better to do your riding around now and keep safe the rest of the year statistically if danger is your concern...

Is this surprising in a country where you can pass your driving test without changing gear or diving on a real road?

 Even if you wanted to bother with the driving test

Very few cars here have a manual transmission so make sense you can pass the test without changing gears....... Automatic transmissions are designed for that.

It takes hard work to hold the title of "worst road toll in the world", but Thailand strives to compete at all costs.

What an amazing experience, to see so many Selfish, Entitled, Incompetent, Murderous  people in charge of road vehicles.

Thais are just shameful on the roads,  they care not, what they do, to each other, or us.

A bit of a generalisation, in my view many Thai divers are very good drivers, many others are reasonable with a vast number utterly and completely useless who shouldn't be allowed to be anywhere near the steering wheel of a car or the handle bars of a motor bike - even a push bike is beyond their capabilities
