Old books and DVD

Featured Replies

Long before Netflix and YOutube.  Long before Audible and Scribd.  Even long before Amazon.

There were these thing that you bought in a store that had anywhere up to 300 what was called pages.

There were also these silver round things with grooves that actually had music and sound called DVD's

Being the old guy that I am hell I can even remember writing letters using a pen and paper putting them in a thing called envelop and attaching a stamp.

My question is for those of us that have or had books once you have read them a few times what do you do with them.  Is there anywhere in BKK that buys them or you can donate them too.

I left some novels on shelves in the lobby and people read them there or take them away.

I was surprised how difficult it is to donate quality books. I know a archeological researcher (something like that) and she has huge shelves full of books. I am sure she paid ten thousands of USD for those books.

Now she is over 80 and will move to a smaller place and she decided to donate the books to a university.

What nightmare!

To accept the books the universities want a list of the books with lots of details. Just the information on the spine is not good enough. They want the edition and other details which require to open every single book.

She spends the time and does that. And she has the patience to do it.

Personally I would have told the university: come and look at those books. If you like, take them all, for free. But don't make me work that you can have those beautiful books.

Sad times.

P.S: Some books have even more than 300 pages. One of my favorites is Pillars of the Earth from Ken Follett with over 800 pages. ????

Depends what kind of books they are. Generally , novels or fiction are not  worth as much as other kinds of books like history or geography etc.  If you have a lot of best sellers they are difficult to shift because book stores will already have many of them.

I use Dasa book store when I am in Bangkok. Mostly I do exchange as get more for them. Wherever you go , you won't get much.

You could donate them to your local Thai library. They don't usually have any English books so might take them off you for free just to fill a couple of shelves.

Personally , I have about 100 books at home. Nearly all history. . I just re read them every couple of years or so as I only keep the really good ones. I am currently on my fourth reading of Shelby Foote's three part history of the American Civil War. I enjoy every reading and absorb more and more of the facts and remember a lot more than a single reading can achieve .

Maybe somebody could start a Library book exchange thread here. List your books and see if anyone wants to buy or exchange.

In Chiang Mai Old City, The Zhong Coffee Bar has a leave one/take one shelf. I got American Skin (good, not great) and left the Rod Stewart autobiography (light on the sex details).

In Pai, I had 4 hardcover books about hill tribes. The used book guy said that hardcover books were unsellable. I just gave them to him. 3 months later, they're still there. Music bio is another dog (got the Rod book for 100 baht).

He said super-thick epics like the novel, It, by Stephen are what people want. And anything Game of Thrones-related sells in a single day. Harry Potter still see some demand too. The Jurassic Park books also have a following.

My friend is bringing me a book about New York disco's of the 80's. Two people want it after me. Both are DJ's. The idea of a book about Dj's was pretty surprising to them.
