Family house broken info, 10,000Baht stolen - need advice please re security cameras

Our village (Don Chan area) is quite secure, outer walls all have cameras, cameras every internal soi, many street lights, etc. But 2 nights back thieves found an unlocked window and emptied DILs purse, nothing else taken.

 

We've now realised there's several dark spots where nobody would notice thieves checking windows etc., so we now put on all the many lights around the house (under the eaves) at dusk.  

 

Son now wants to install 4 or 5 cameras but he has no knowledge what to buy / perhaps a whole system?

At a reasonable price.

 

I'm guessing there's new/improved technology in this area all the time.

 

Expert suggestions appreciated.

People who sell these equipment usually are also the expert who can advise you best what to buy by visiting your house or showing them floor plans of the property, but be careful who do you invite into your house too.

We have Xiaomi cameras that we bought from Lazada that are pretty good. They come in various resolutions, and in wired or wireless.

 

This one from Aliexpress is similar, but not exactly the same I think. You can view them and control them via an app on your phone:

If you have dark areas, you might want to look at cameras with Night Vision. They normally have some sort of infrared lighting that humans  can't see, but it lights things up for the camera to see in the dark.

 

Of course, if you are happy fitting LED floodlights connected to motion detectors, that is another alternative, allowing ordinary security cameras. Has it's positives and negatives. 

Positive: It lights up if anyone approaches the house, thereby deterring burglars.

Negatives: it also lights up when any animals pass by the sensor. So you could have the lights going on several times throughout the night. Making you jump out of bed to keep looking out the window if you are worried.

We have a senior cop living opposite our house, a few years back he invited three builders to come and measure etc., and give quotes for adding another room to his house.

 

He told each builder 'you must come alone' and he and his wife made sure they were close by all the time each builder was in the house.

 

Third guy came. Next morning their Toyota Fortuna was missing. Plus a small box with wife's jewellery missing.

 

Other cops quickly tracked down the Toyota and they could see the jewellery box in the car. They waited until someone came to get in the car, it was the 'builder'.

Without an alarm system linked to armed response the cameras will do nothing but provide lousy quality pictures that the RTP will show no interest in. Best to ensure your house is always locked up securely if you are not at home. And leaving the bathroom light on for long nighttime hours is a sure sign you are not at home. No home is ever 100% protected as I learned in another country. I had alarms, armed response, industrial fencing behind 2 metre walls and still I was held up at gunpoint, robbed and left tied up and locked in my bedroom for hours until my shouts were heard by a neighbour.

Have been burgled 2 times over the years after first moving into our new house. First time we had no form of protection as we were in the finishing stages of our house build. My wife woke me up saying there was a man in our bedrom. I gave chase but..........

Second time we were burgled we had gone on holiday to Singapore. To gain access the crooks had poisoned my 2 Cocker Spanials. 

Since having stainless steel grills installed inside the house windows never a problem. Recommended.

A house I owned in South America had 12 foot perimeter walls topped with broken glass. Paid a monthly contract for armed response. Never got burgled but my laptop was stolen. Suspected it was the lady we employed for cleaning/laundry. No cameras installed so could never establish who took it.

Initially we had that. But to overcome the glass the intruders used rolled up grass mats to bypass that.

As I wrote a few years ago in response to another individual seeing advice:

 

After extensive researching the internet of security camera attributes, current technology, Thailand marketplace resources; I chose to purchase and have installed the cameras and DVR by a local factory authorized dealer of a particular manufacture’s product line- HikVision.  Before I began my search for a specific manufacturer, I created a list of my priorities ("Home Security Camera System Reqts" file)

 

I purchased 6 model DS-2CE16D0T-IT3F HD 1080p EXIR Bullet Cameras (outdoor) & 2 model DS-2CE56D0T-IT3F HD 1080p EXIR Turret Camera (indoor) and DS-7200HQHI-K1 HD DVR.

 

I chose the HikVision product because of their extensive offerings of camera systems in Thailand; their clearly understandable and detailed website of their products and technologies; and their high Customer satisfaction ratings I came across.

 

They work great.

 

As you consider your options, a couple of key fundamentals to consider and decide upon.

 

Cameras require a power supply to operate.  Electrical wiring may have to be installed where each of the cameras are to be located.  This will add to the installation costs.

 

Cameras require their signal to be broadcasted to your monitor, and/or DVR.  This is accomplished by either (1) cable (coax or Ethernet or fiber optic, depending on the speed and resolution desired/required), or (2) Wifi.  If you don’t have cabling already installed, it may be the most expensive part of the system cost (this is normal) and you can avoid cabling costs by using Wifi.  However, wifi depends on enough bandwidth and speed to transmit and your location may not have the speed you need; or it will use significant amount of bandwidth which degrades your internet and streaming needs that you use today.  You’ll have to explore the feasibility of wifi with whomever you decide to purchase your camera system from; it certainly can significantly reduce the cost of installation (as opposed to installing cable).

 

You’ll have to decide what external and/or internal areas you want covered by security cameras- that drives per camera cost, power needs, and camera’s transmission of the view.  You’ll need to decide if you want continuous recording, or recording only when motion is detected; camera resolution daytime and nighttime; if you want sound to be recorded; or???.

I'd recommend the Ezviz Mini O camera connected to your home wi-fi network can then be monitored by you at home or away via internet,  Have 4 cameras around the house and with SD cards installed they loop record and capture motion and quality is good.

Don't get a dog as suggested. It'll bark all night and <deleted> of the neighbors( just think about if the neighbors got a dog that barked all night and how you'd like it). Lights are usually enough to deter criminals. Just get better at putting/hiding valuables in an out-of-the-way place where no one would look. Keep the cash secured away in a hard-to-find place. 10,000 isn't all that much. Just consider it a lesson learned.

Get digital Hikvision or Dahua brand NVR and cameras. Get same brand IP 4-6MP cameras, at least 4mm, preferrably 6MM or 8MM lenses, use ethernet cable not wifi. Most cams have IR and can record in the dark. Hide the NVR and secure it so it can't be stolen. Install the cameras so the cover each other, so if there is any tampering, it will be recorded.

From a practical point of view... Most thieves are well aware of cameras and would disguise their faces. Ok, so you were robbed and have some video footage showing the burglars stealing your stuff. What are you going to do?

 

Even in the unlikely event, the police found the burglars, anything they stole will be long gone. You'll never get your stuff or money back.

 

We had a security guy at our condo (a new one) climb into our apartment and steal cash and a wedding ring. We knew who it was... there was no doubt. He was seen leaving the building just after (on camera). We never got our stuff back and wasted hours at the police station.

Very useful tips thank you. We have HiKVision at home and in the Mrs's shop. Hard wired at home and WiFi in her shop. At home rats chew the cables in the loft causing both intermittent and complete failures. It didn't take long before one of the cameras at her shop failed. The installer/maintainer guy is very difficult to get hold of. The hard drive recorder is located under the TV in our lounge. Hardly secure. We don't have complete coverage either. Definitely room for improvement!

In rat areas, string the cables through steel conduits, available at electrical supply shops. Glue traps can help catch the rats. Some cams have SD cards, and the video is both sent to the NVR and recorded onto the card in the cam. So the thief would have to take both NVR and any cam that recorded him.

some thieves will poison your dog/s which was common in Pattaya in the late 90s and before. In some cases they couldn't get in the home. We lost two dogs on separate occasions living on Jomtien.  Well trained dogs will only eat what the owners give them. More cameras won't hurt.

we have  5 cameras on our house in Bangsarey and also 3 on my G/F business,, but intruders still try and get in , if she is sleeping on the farm she has booby traps and a shotgun ,, at the house   she is just plain paranoid its like living in a jail she locks every door as she goes,, shame really as I would love to thump a burgler with a machete or hammer,, did that at my old house in Eakmongol 1 Pattaya years ago ,about nine at night  2 young guys burst in to front room where my wife and her sister and our at the time 6 year old daughter was ,I was watching  TV in another room ,heard shouting and screaming so grab my hammer and a garden machete and weighed in , result one ran away but I had his mate on the floor  with a blow from blunt side of machete,, cops came took him away , and arrested his mate next day,, we had no problems with the BIB ,  both perps confessed and got 2 years in clink
