Whilst I appreciate that the forum needs to make money and that advertising is the ultimate option.

 

But I believe this is an English forum if so why are so many of the ads in Thai?

Probably because they are selected based on your IP and therefore Thailand.

Mr Google chooses them, not us.

Losing a lot of revenue I would guess then, there are other options?

I expect the majority of the forum's traffic, and hence ad-revenie comes from overseas, so an ip-based solution probably makes sense.
