Lack of insects in thai coastal cities

Why there are no insects in cities like pattaya, bangkok, huahin, bang sarai, except cockroaches and flies of course and occasional wasps. Like i can see plenty of flowers around but no butterflies, no beetles, no spiders, no bees, no exotic ones like mantis..

They're there but there's also plenty of things hiding just out of sight waiting to eat anything that moves.

Just a gut feeling, but I feel there are less geckos about these days. My memory says that years ago any light on after dark attracted loads of them because there were many insects flying around. Both seem less now.

Exact same thing here in Prachuap. Compared to 10 years ago.bugs, gekco, and bird almost all gone. Makes you think, who's next

There are butterflies there - but many species are seasonal.   However what you are seeing is a worldwide phenomenon - where insect numbers are rapidly declining, due to injudicious insecticide use and more importantly habitat destruction.

As a kid in my native Australia, I remember driving holidays where we would have to stop every few hours and clean the dead bugs off of the windscreen - that has not happened for nearly 30 years there now. 

The insect biomass is reducing annually - and when they are gone - we will be too!

Good point. Just been driving around the Northern Rivers area in NSW and can confirm, compared to 40 years ago when last there; my white hire car was still pristeen white after 3 days of driving. Also the Road-Kill was a lot less as well.

Bang Saray we have butterflies, bugs geckos (Chin Choke) way too many flys, small bees, and occasional bumble bee......right now looking for a Beneficial Insect house to put in backyard, Have not seen them and may need to make my own...

Overuse of pesticides.

Thailand is one of the top user/abusers of pesticides.

I had more insects and rodents around my house in Adelaide, SA than I ever see here. More cockroaches, millipedes, wasps, mice, spiders,and of course flies.

No Trees, plants, nothing!

 

But go just 5-10Kms out of town and there you have plenty of insect life etc.

The more humans and concrete, the less insect life. Apart from as you say, cockroaches and flies.

Just south of Hua Hin   Wang Pong...   bees, wasps, spiders, centipedes ( big mama's) tons of mantis, butterflies, scorpions, snakes snakes snakes,   they must love pineapple.. have not seen a worm  in 2 years

Oddly enough, there are hundreds of Geckos at my aunt's house in Louisiana.   I don't know how they survive the winter, but they are out and about all around the house eves and porch ceiling in the warmer days, at night.  Especially when the porch light is on which attracts the nocturnal flying insects.

I live in central bangkok in a house. It the wild kingdom out here dragon flies, wasps, bees, centipedes you name it. Occasional snakes, skinks and a <deleted> ton of different bird species.

The number of house geckos has reduced to a very low number this month. It's due to lack of food caused by the extremely dry weather the last 4 months. Most insects are susceptible to drought. I've seen quite a few dead geckos lying around the last few weeks. The mosquitos are still doing ok though.

I live next to a big park, but still few insects and geckos. We're in drought conditions right now.

You are either blind or have never been in Bangkok like the OP.

Loads of insects, trees, and plants. Also on average there are snakes reported every 15 minutes.

Same here, kill about 100 mosquitoes on a daily basis but keep on coming.
