Russia has been sending some US-provided weapons captured in Ukraine to Iran

Russia has been capturing some of the US and NATO-provided weapons and equipment left on the battlefield in Ukraine and sending them to Iran, where the US believes Tehran will try to reverse-engineer the systems, four sources familiar with the matter told CNN.

 

Over the last year, US, NATO and other Western officials have seen several instances of Russian forces seizing smaller, shoulder-fired weapons equipment including Javelin anti-tank and Stinger anti-aircraft systems that Ukrainian forces have at times been forced to leave behind on the battlefield, the sources told CNN.

 

In many of those cases, Russia has then flown the equipment to Iran to dismantle and analyze, likely so the Iranian military can attempt to make their own version of the weapons, sources said.

they are an old technology - stingers were donated by the usa to osama bin laden in afganistan some 40 years ago. They were also sold to Saddam Hussain during war with Iran.

Javelin is also 25 years old and used in battlefields across globe. 

Possible some international treaty forbids russia from copying the usa armaments, but iran can make them, and at fraction of current market price. That would mean price of the usa made ones would have to fall to compete.

 

but I think this whole story is not true, just war hype - as russia can easily send to iran everything they know about those weapons and how their own weapons are designed to countermeasure.

Wish means I don't believe a word of it. Russia is much more likely to copy the weapons themselves just as the weapons in Afghanistan were mostly sent to China & Russia, sources say.

It was send to iran already in summer.

Ukraine got donated 2000 pieces yet before started, and thousands more just in the beginning.

Effective, because countermeasures are unknown yet. That was the first time this weapon was used on a battlefield. So british and countries, which bought them, lost now an advantage of surprise. 

I am not sure if brits have a newer, more advanced one.

 Brits sell them for 30-40k gbp. Again, price will fall, if iran, russia start making them cheaper and exporting

Its reported that British NLAW anti-tank missile, a US Javelin anti-tank missile were allegedly captured and sent to Iran back in Nov last year but a British bazookas? Got a link for that?

If Iran wanted some US weapons to copy, might it be easier to buy them from the Taliban? I am pretty sure lots of weapons were left behind when US took a powder

yes, you have link, but you havent read the second paragraph, here just part of it:

It"s legal to buy bazooka in the usa, if you have permit. However, there is a problem with their disposal. I am not sure how much serious this article is

Technology such as stinger missiles are often upgraded with new variants and capabilities. One recent upgrade (2014) added new sensors and a target detection system for UAVs. Iran/Russia will learn somethings but this is simply a fact of war. 

 

The current stinger line is no longer manufacturable because its computer chips are no longer available. So it's unlikely that Russia or Iran can simply copy them. The US is  also developing a new MANPADS system to replace the stinger.

Humiliating for Russia if they must send the weapons to Iran for dismantling and analyze... That tells a lot.
