Stopped by the Thai highway police

Hi All . People always seem to slag the Thai Police  , But I have to report a good experience , First I'll hold my hands up I was clocked at 132kph on my bike on 1 AH highway yesterday , from being pulled over to leaving with a 500 baht fine paid for at the pull in station I was treated so politely/respectfully and even given a   bottle of sweet lychee  ice tea. I was shown photo evidence of me speeding (so not a rip off)   . I could not pay with my banking app(not work for some reason) .and could not pay with cash the station . so a lady in the police station office scanned my ticket and paid it on her phone app , I then gave her the 500Baht fine money  and also offered her a small tip for her help which she refused point blank ... the police officer then told me to take a photo of the receipt off her phone  and the speeding ticket as evidence and proof of payment  .

10/10 for the police    .. and 10/10 for my stupidity at getting caught

The OP exceeded the speed limit (possibly by 10% if it was the AH1, if the limit was 90 kph on the AH1 then it is ridiculously low limit) and paid his dues. Not sure why you think driving a motorbike at 82 mph is "endangering the lives of people living in Thailand"

132 kph (82 mph) really isn't that fast, and we don't know what & where or the road conditions.  Obviously good enough to go that fast, and hopefully as responsible as possible, and aware of cross traffic, if any.

 

There's some long stretch of highway here where 132 kph is quite safe to do.

 

I've gone much faster, though not in Thailand.  I've pretty sure I've done about 225 kph (140 mph) back in the ol' USA.  On open interstate hwy, metro area.   As here, I wouldn't do it in the countryside, too many deer, as there are dogs here for my older reserved self.

 

I'm constantly passed by cars here doing 130+ kph, so not exactly ruining the farang image.

Are sandals, T-shirts and shorts typical of someone who drives a motorbike than can comfortably do 132 kph?

On many Thai highways when the road is clear you had better be going that fast or you will have to be in the bumpy lane for trucks.

I've been stopped by Highway Police while cycling on highway #3 south through Chanthaburi. 

In a brief comedy moment I was asked if my drink bottle contained alcohol, the usual "what country are you from?", then

given a bottle of water, and more useful, directions for an alternative route to my destination with less traffic.

That's their good deed of the day

There are TWO separate laws on the books in both England and America, and there is a chance this law-breaking, endangering, (AL Code Sec. 32-5A-190 as an example), could possibly land this person in very serious trouble abroad.  Both consulates and embassies have been notified, CCTV's are being watched, and the police officers in question should be consulted by the necessary diplomats.   There is a kind of reckless behavior that will warrant much, much more investigation.   

 

So, when a falang crashes into your family going 200 kph, maybe smile and say, "No problem, on the message boards I supported such behavior!!!!!!"

Anybody else thinking Thailand needs to stiffen traffic violation penalties for foreigners? Five hundred baht.scarcely serves as a deterrent. Not going to sit in judgment of the OP, but the expression "lead by example" comes to mind, especially when you consider the constant bashing of Thai drivers on this forum.

That's all I've ever worn (weather permitting), whether TH or USA.  Besides helmet of course.

On a ‘real motorcycle’ travelling at highways speeds ?? (120 kmh / often 120kmh+ consistent riding).

(Yes, I know the law is less, but its safer riding at the same speed as the traffic around you).

So you'd be in favor of dual pricing of fines too non Thai nationals ??  Now that sounds like a good idea "NOT" ,,,, 99% of drivers in Thailand are  Thai ..and 500baht  is nearly double the minimum wage .. sorry the say the world here doesn't really revolve around farangs as much as the narrow minded bar stool'er's want to think.

Ok, but I actually don´t know what you are talking about at all! The safest thing is if all are driving legally. For that to happen, some people must start and other follow. This is a good start with fining for speeding. The only thing wrong is that it should be a zero more after the 5.

Its not safer at all if you are doing 80kmh and all other traffic is passing you at 120kmh....
