As Thailand approaches election season, it is not only Thai people that closely anticipate how our country will move forward–the world is also looking on.

Thailand’s international reputation is historically strong, with Thai diplomats utilising the so-called ‘bamboo diplomacy,’ or a foreign policy marked by pragmatism and flexibility that balances competing geopolitical interests and ‘bends with the wind.’ But Thailand’s recent international blunders may have put our reputation to test.

Whoever may form the new government, their new foreign policy should move away from these blunders.

Hilarious.  The world could not care less about Thailand.  It is viewed as a corrupt and politically disfunctional backwater.

As viewed from within?

Bamboo diplomacy,’ or a foreign policy marked by pragmatism and flexibility that balances competing geopolitical interests and ‘bends with the wind.’

In other words, never criticize a despot neighbor like Burma or Cambodia, regardless of what they are doing. Forsake the moral high ground, and always consider the money, not the benefits for the people.

And bow down to the Master, China, while remaining neutral towards sinister aggressors, like Russia. One needs not antagonize, after all.

Thailand is not a world player....not even democratic enough and surely an unreliable partner... Laws should be reviewed to enter the 21st century first

Thai foreign policy is all about sitting on the fence in a vacuum.

As is most, if not all, foreign policy practices.

Some - much much more nastier than others.

Any member of my family know the name of the actual PM, and they neither know anything about elections...what they know is a Dictatorship...5555

While still appearing to be aligned with the US, Thailand will likely move closer to the emerging Chinese superpower and its satellites, including Russia, as this interesting academic study shows.
