Uganda parliament passes bill to jail gay people

Featured Replies

Uganda's parliament has passed a bill which would criminalise people who identify as gay, or a sexual minority.

Individuals could face lengthy prison terms if the bill is signed into law by President Yoweri Museveni.

Under the proposed legislation, friends, family and members of the community would have a duty to report individuals in same-sex relationships to the authorities.

Homosexual acts are already illegal in the east African country.

But the bill seeks to go further and criminalise people on the basis of their sexual identity.

The bill, which was first tabled earlier this month, passed with widespread support in Uganda's parliament on Tuesday.

People trying to trivialize what Uganda is doing or resorting to Muslim whatsboutism make me wonder if they support what Uganda is doing.    It's important to note that the anti gay movement

Hopefully some posters will now divert their opprobrium from western countries that permit homosexuality ( and even protect it in law ) to those countries that are violently opposed to it.

I hope all foreign government aid donors are reconsidering their support for Uganda in light of this. It is a pity that ordinary Ugandans will suffer if this happens, but all levers should be pulled to put pressure on the Ugandan government to block this bill.

And what about the other 81 countries who also outlaw homosexuality?

81? The BBC suggest that the number is lower, and some of those are taking steps to decriminalise homosexuality.

How many of those are recipients of foreign aid? I can't say, can you?

However, human rights should be a fundamental basis for all overseas aid considerations.

Looking at that excellent map in the sub link the strictest places are mostly grouped adjacent and mostly in the same two main regions of the world:

By that map, I would not factor in British (or any other) colonial influence too much but rather examine the most popular religions in those regions.

I suppose just stating the bleedin' obvious is far too politically incorrect and taboo so just blame the British then. Good old Auntie Beeb.

I look forward to your response when Ugandans arrive in the west seeking asylum on the basis of being persecuted for their sexual orientation in Uganda.

Right so Colonial Administrations did or did not promulgate laws against homosexuality?

Presumably they must have ticked all the required boxes now for FIFA to award them the next world cup.

I don't think it was much of a priority to them. The British weren't expecting to convert the religious followings of entire populations.

Deplorable bill.

UN and US join chorus of condemnation against Uganda’s hardline anti-LGBT bill

The United Nations and United States on Wednesday added to international outrage over a hardline bill passed by Ugandan lawmakers that criminalizes simply identifying as LGBTQ+, prescribes a life sentence for convicted homosexuals and a death penalty for “aggravated homosexuality.”

“The passing of this discriminatory bill – probably among the worst of its kind in the world – is a deeply troubling development,” said a statement from Türk’s office.

Same as many muslim countries, you don't hear much outrage about them though

The thing is, that's been mostly the case in those countries for a long time. The difference is that In the case of Uganda, it's actually regressing.

The topic is about a country that has made something illegal which is also illegal in many other countries that all have something in common (Islam).   Why would that be out of scope for this topic other than the fact it's an uncomfortable truth the left doesn't want to acknowledge?    The only reason this particular instance has generated some outrage is that it is *not* a majority muslim country so Uganda is not privy to the bigotry of low expectations that would give them a free pass on this.

Yes, that country is Uganda.

The topic is, what’s going on in…… Uganda.

Then any and all international aid for Uganda should be withdrawn. Chances are it's being pocketed by corrupt officials anyway.

Should all public displays of community be banned, or only those communities of which you, personally, don't approve?

This thread is not about attempts to force 'propaganda' on anyone; rather it's about a country legislating to jail people simply for existing.

Actually. it is not " about a country legislating to jail people simply for existing.", to be honest, it's about a country legislating to jail people for particular behaviors.

To be clear, I do not support the legislation, nor am I excusing it, but it is what it is.

That reminds me, I must renew my gay permit.  ????

I see what you're trying to get at but on the day that an independent enquiry released a scathing report on institutionalised  homophobia in the U.K. Met. Police I'm afraid my opprobrium remains.

Musa Ecweru has stated explicitly that he will make sure that "...there will be no space for homosexuals in Uganda."

Not only about behaviors!

It's about behaviors

AND

Identity

AND

not reporting people that you know with the criminalized identity.

In some ways much worse than many Muslim countries.
