DEPOSED PRIME MINISTER Thaksin Shinawatra might probably be detained in a hospital or nursing home instead of being imprisoned in jail after he has returned home from self-exile abroad, according to a noted academic.

Thanaporn Sriyakul, head of Kasetsart University’s Political Science Association, remarked that Thaksin who has earlier offered to put himself behind bars immediately after he has returned home from 16 years of self-exile overseas might probably be taken care of by a Pheu Thai-led coalition government following the May 14 general election to the extent that he be practically detained at a certain place such as a hospital or nursing home instead of a prison where he would otherwise serve a 10-year term due to a few convicted lawsuits.

That Thaksin has made a surprise by offering to return home and go straight into jail was primarily a desperate ploy to woo popularity for the Pheu Thai which has repeatedly heralded a landslide victory in the nationwide election, according to the Kasetsart academeic.

Would you care to provide anything to substantiate that? What are you classifying as drugs?? Caffeine, Nicotine, Alcohol etc???

That's a poor deflection.

Caffeine, Nicotine, Alcohol etc - none of these are illegal and never have been.

I like to suggest an alternative:

Your alternative to the Yingluck administration - the military coup and subsequent junta didn't turn out too well for the people of Thailand unfortunately.

The one who cannot be named and the vast majority of the Thai population did at the time too.

With that logic everybody in Thailand is a gambler.

Look at all the illegal casinos. Look at all the people who get arrested in those casinos.

100% get arrested in those places, that means 100% Thais must be gamblers. Or maybe not?

Quite possibly... another type of addiction.

There were a terrible amount of deaths that had nothing to do with narcotics. Beside that you can't fix drug problems with shooting problems. The root is a society problem and to reduce it, you must take the money out of it, not increasing the profit. Beside of being a crime shooting people doesn't fix the problem

First time I came to Thailand, way back in 2001 I think, there was a big electric digital moving sign at the old airport 'Trafficking drugs carries the death penalty'. (or something) I liked it then, i like it now. Death penalty should always be used for large amounts - you think killing say 1,000 people with a batch of the latest Chinese/Mexican moving drugs should not result in death to the supplier ? I think most rational people can see the difference between a few ounces and a truck load of something.

It seems like this thread got hijacked by drugs.

Thaksin was popular with common people for introducing universal healthcare and halving the poverty rate. That's why they liked him.

But he also killed innocents, women and children, do you condone that?

How many innocent people did Thaksin actually personally kill.

Can you explain that please?

Are people not innocent until proven guilty? The dead cannot defend themselves! Do you support that?

So would I, but draw the line at all and sundry that were removed as being in the way of this despot and others using it to eliminate anyone in their way.

But guess when you have a convicted drug dealer (or was that a flour salesman) acting as a politician, just about anything is ok in LOS.
