Phuket – now a lot more than bars, beaches and temples

Phuket has transformed into a highly sophisticated tourist destination with plenty to see and experience for all budgets. Although it is often known for its tropical paradise and infamous Patong nightlife, there is much more to enjoy on the island. In fact, Patong Beach makes up only a small portion of the island’s landmass, which is about 80% the size of Singapore. As the island has developed there has been a significant increase in accommodation and destinations outside of Patong.

 

Despite some believing that Phuket has lost its charm due to its popularity and development, we believe that the charm still remains, along with many new attractions. Visitors can enjoy some of the best beaches in the world, visit other tropical islands, zip through the treetops of the many tropical rainforests, watch spectacular, world-class, family-friendly shows, experience Thai-style nightlife, sample some of the world’s best cuisines, or shop at the numerous markets, duty-free emporiums and western-style shopping centres.

 

Despite these popular attractions, visitors can still find secluded beaches where they may not see anyone for the entire day. They can also find beachside restaurants serving delicious Thai food for just a few dollars, or visit temples where the daily routines have remained unchanged for centuries. The beaches, bars and temples are still here, there’s just so much more to see now.

Wow "Finally, street dogs, commonly known as soi dogs, are a familiar sight, " Putting a positive spin on Soi Dogs. Think they need to add something about the friendly Russians and the helpful Taxi Mafia.

In Bangkok the minimum price is 40B, in Phuket 5 times as much.

I am there shortlyish. First proper look in ten years. Two nights in Patong will do and two nights in Phuket Town that looks like a fun place to be on the weekend. Then off to beaches off the island.

it's a beach resort. not a concrete jungle like bkk. so i don't mind.

still cheaper than a lot of places.

yes the taxi mafia  are very helpful, if you want  spend 800 b to go to your hotel, with a stop at 7 11,  distance 2 kms, never set foot in that place again, rather shave my head with a cheese grater.

The Tourism Department is a joke,there are two beaches, Layan and Bangtao

which had beach bars until recently.  These were highly popular with tourists and provided employment for many locals. Virtually overnight they were bulldozed down and now tourists cannot get a drink or a snack on these beaches hence, they are virtually desolate now.  The rationale given is that the beach bars were unauthorised so why couldn't they come to some arrangement with the vendors, all sorts of theories e.g. they weren't paying the Mafia enough, the hotels ganged up against them etc.  Whatever the reason tourists and locals loved them, they employed many people and they are sorely missed.

Lived there for 11 years, is the most expansive province of LOS.

Already 15 years ago, then I met people who told me it is not as beautiful(l) as a few years ago.

Yep its a disgrace and a shame. Thank the gods I/we never have any need to use the Phuket taxi mafia thieves.

Not to mention two week delay to get anything repaired, if indeed they will repair it and priced out of this World.  Sad thing is that some people after living in Thailand overlook the good points so they can have a good moan at the bad points.  Suggest you have a little trip back to your own Country to remind you of all the downsides that you have overlooked there?
