Thailand, Laos and Myanmar Discuss Transboundary Haze Pollution

BANGKOK, April 7 – Thai Prime Minister Gen. Prayut Chan-ocha hosted a trilateral consultation with leaders from Lao PDR and Myanmar to strengthen cooperation and tackle transboundary haze pollution among the three countries.

 

Gen. Prayut hosted a trilateral consultation on transboundary haze pollution via videoconference with Sonexay Siphandone, Prime Minister of the Lao PDR, and Senior General Min Aung Hlaing, Prime Minister of Myanmar.

 

The meeting discussed constructive and concrete approaches to tackle the transboundary haze pollution and exchanged information and experiences on addressing this problem.

Sure, but step 1 is to form a committee to decide what the ultimate committee should look like.

Then we see the real committee.

Then the real committ meets and decides what subject will be discussed and the date of the next meeting.

Next meeting decides what 3 in 1 coffee will be servd and there's a survey re what donuts to by for the snacks, but nothing decided because too many suggestions and demands to patronise the donut shop of friend of oldest committee member but will take time for delivery because donut bakery is in another city so meeting date postponed.

 

You think I jest? Seen it all before re committees at my old university. 

Then next meeting collapses because the notes of the earlier meeting have gone missing, still at the house of the minor wife of the committee secretary.

Rome wasn't buit in a day you know.

Typical way of addressing problems here.  Wait until the problem hits the critical stage, start discussing how to handle it then wait until it goes away.  Of course nothing gets done and the cycle will be repeated next year.  This happens with the annual smoke issue here in the north and the annual flooding issue around Bangkok.

Prayut now take credit for what Nature did last year. Non seasonal early rain and strong wind was able reduce hotspots, not the authorities. Disgusting.

Spot on, it’s been a major issue for years now. Just as COVID broke I was visiting the north and you could literally taste the smoke in the air. 

 

When the rains arrive in early May, these three will no doubt be claiming the credit for this meeting having contributed to solving the issue…

 

A challenging one for Thailand, who can’t even control their own burning. How do you cajole others to control theirs ? Thailand uses the economic excuse internally - not wanting to add burdens to farmers. I wonder if Myanmar and Laos, which are much poorer, will just use the same reasoning ? I expect Thailand has closer ties with Laos and may be able to apply some political and economic pressure, as for Myanmar, who knows. 

 

Anyway, time for Thailand as the ‘heavyweight’ in this threesome to take the lead and give an example to the others on how to significantly reduce the burning.
