Mysterious death: Australian tourist found dead in police station cell

An Australian tourist was found dead in a solitary cell at Patong Police Station, Phuket, after allegedly being intoxicated and causing a disturbance. The mysterious death, captured on CCTV, prompted a swift police investigation.

 

On April 24th, authorities at the Patong Police Station reported the man's hanging in a detention room. The 29-year-old was discovered hanging from a rope, with no signs of assault. A thorough autopsy was conducted to determine the cause of death, reported Daily News.

The deceased was a tourist staying at a hotel near Patong Beach and had been causing disruptions for other guests. He was taken into custody at the police station to calm him down. It is believed that he used the rope from his pants to hang himself while the duty officer was on a lunch break.

Authorities collaborated with the Australian Embassy in Thailand to contact the man's relatives and coordinate the collection of the body for further procedures. The exact cause of death remains uncertain, pending autopsy and blood test results.

Neglect of care !

Why wasn't he given the care and attention

It's the same with Bali,  Aussie kids head there on their end of  school vacations to party and most times are neglected by the authorities who are supposed to take care of them

The whole purpose of having cells with CCTV is so they can be monitored 24/7  ......   obviously doesn't happen in Thailand police jails.

Normal safety procedures require a thorough body search and removal of belts, shoes and any form of clothing that could be considered a weapon or cause personal harm  .....    obviously doesn't happen in Thailand police jails.

I have taken people to jail many times.  A pre booking search is supposed to remove, inventory and store everything a prisoner has.  This even includes shoe laces because an improvised noose can be made from them. In terms of CCTV, it is impossible to watch a prisoner 100% of the time.  Cell checks should have been conducted at least every 60 minutes or 30 minutes.  Also, does anyone think jail personnel are trained in first aid or even CPR in LOS?  I doubt it.

It’s not declared suicide yet? I thought that’s how every falang death is Thailand is market to start with. I am sure they will figure out how he choked himself by inserting his head between the jail Iron bars….

An autopsy is required .It may not of been a hanging .

ALL Falang are sent for autopsy, even if you die from a long illness in hospital.

It's a poor translation. Again. The quoted Daily News item states 'sports pants tied to the bars' and that he used the pants as a rope to tie around his neck. 

 

Matichon News identified the man as "Michael Matthew Winder, 31, an Australian national" after a drunken rampage on Bangla Road, and states he tied his shirt around his neck and bars of his cell. 

 

A third news source may have another version! . . . I don't know what to believe.

The only thing I can think of is that he had mental issues, or that he had used some drugs which messed with his mind. Whichever the case, very sad to depart this mortal coil at the age of 29 (or 31?).

All criminals have mental issues. Why else would you engage in violence and get arrested?

Some people do make mistakes in life. It does not make one a criminal.  Mental health issues are not immediately known in folks until diagnosed. May he RIP.

Fair enough but people are quick to blame the Thais for a guy with issues likely killing himself. They can't take belts, shirts and long pants of all people in the rough event they kill themselves.

There has been many cases this year from young men acting strangely due to drugs .
